Dave Dorman News: Announcing the WASTED LANDS Omnibus by Magnetic Press

Dear Friends,

First off, I need to be sure to mention that I, artists Douglas Klauba and Aaron B. Miller will all be speaking at HEVANSTON GALLERY in Evanston, IL at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd, EARTH DAY. Since we artists all work from home and save so much of the rest of the world’s carbon footprint, I think you should join us in celebrating that on Earth Day. Charlie Athanas, the gallery’s curator, will be hosting our lecture. That address is HEVANSTON GALLERY, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL 60201.

Now I want to share with you info on my creator-owned series, THE WASTED LANDS, which is now a new book, the WASTED LANDS Omnibus, published by Magnetic Press and publisher Mike Kennedy. It’s a huge honor to share this with all of you, and I think Mike Kennedy has done an amazing job. If you’ve noticed me rather silent lately on social media, it’s because I’ve been working so hard to meet this deadline–I’m still working hard on it–to get every comic book page recolored and relettered. I hope you all enjoy the end result:

When GEEK Worlds Collide: ProofX Is Premiering My WASTED LANDS Character in 3D Printout at MacWorld Tomorrow

Dear Friends,

I’m excited to announce that Dima Elissa, CEO of ProofX in Chicago will be presenting the world premiere of the 3D print-out of my WASTED LANDS villainous character THE HOLLOW MAN at MacWorld  tomorrow as part of her presentation at 11:40 a.m. titled “3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping: For Macs and Medicine.” I was very fortunate to work with fellow artist Dave Taylor of Imagination Rendered in Valparaiso, Florida, who did the 3D sculpting of my HOLLOW MAN character, based on my concept art.  I was also fortunate to work with Nuha Nazy at ProofX in getting the logistics managed and the 3D printed piece produced in time for MacWorld – it was a bit of a whirlwind this past weekend on top of my appearance at REEL ART in Berwyn. (A special thanks to Corey, Robert Garcia and the team who put that event together.) Anyhow, I hope my WASTED LANDS creature is well received and if you’re in the MacWorld audience, tomorrow, send me photos or footage of the presentation since they’re not streaming it for the general public. If you haven’t already, please “Like” my WASTED LANDS Fan Page: http://facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands. Here’s the concept art for my HOLLOW MAN character:

Dima Elissa will be hosting an Open House at her ProofX location on April 8th at 1001 University Place in Evanston, IL from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I hope those of you in Chicagoland can join us there. (Just don’t look for me there at 7 a.m.!)

Additionally, I will be participating in a 3-man art show on April 4th at Hevanston Art Gallery, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL curated by my longtime friend and collaborator Charlie Athanas. Joining me will be my good friends and artist colleagues, Douglas Klauba (you’ve seen Doug’s “Stella 7″ art on Howard Wolowitz’s bedroom wall  if you’ve ever watched “Big Bang Theory”) and Aaron B. Miller

This week I’m working hard on meeting my deadline for Mike Kennedy, publisher of Magnetic Press, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con, so be sure to watch for that – I’ve recolored all of the art from my first graphic novel, RAIL: BROKEN THINGS, as well as the SKINNERS story that first appeared in PENTHOUSE COMICS. I am also creating new art for the book.

Here’s Where You Can Find Me in 2014:

April 10, 11, 12, 13, 14: I’ll be a judge again this year in the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards in Hollywood in mid-April, so if you need to meet with me while out there, contact denise@writebrainmedia.com and she will work hard to get you on my calendar. If you want to see me look ridiculous in a tuxedo, watch the awards ceremony streaming live that Sunday the 13th.

April 25, 26, 27 -  I will be exhibiting in Artists Alley at C2E2 in Chicago at McCormick Place

May 9, 10. 11 - Find me at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live in Kansas City, KS.

May 30, 31, and June 1: I will be exhibiting at Indy PopCon in Indianapolis, IN – this show is curated by Larry Zore of Comics Price Guide and it is a family-friendly show.

June 7: I will be signing at Joliet Star Wars Day at the Joliet Public Library – this is the World’s Largest Star Wars Library Event, so come on out.

July 24, 25, 26, 27 - I will be exhibiting at Booth #4500 at San Diego Comic-Con. Joining me will be Mike and Tim Bawden of SILENT GUNFIGHT with their WASTED LANDS Board Game, IRON WARS, plus a new WASTED LANDS card game called RED TIDE, and Steve Smith of ALAXIS PRESS, publisher of THE LEANING GIRL - the first book from THE OBSCURE CITIES series, published in English for the first time, who will join me with SDCC featured guests writer Benoit Peeters and artist Francois Schuiten.

August 14, 15, 16, 17th - I will be attending GenCon in Indianapolis – I’m not sure yet if we’re exhibiting there with SILENT GUNFIGHT.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

DAVE.

Some Interviews I Did This Past Week – Video & Print

Dear Friends,

I’ve decided to get better about posting my interviews since many of you probably don’t see them unless I mention them, so this past week, I did two – one with Shawn Hopman of Nerdgasm.net in print, and one with host Carlos Phoenix of The Lounge Network. Here are those two links for you:

The Nerdgasm Interview:  http://nerdgasms.net/interview-with-illustrator-legend-dave-dorman/

The Lounge Network Video Interview: http://www.theloungenetwork.com/2014/02/02/dave-dorman-stars-wars-dungeons-dragons-lounge-interview/

The weekend of February 21 , 22 and 23rd, we will be in Pensacola for PensaCon, so Denise and I hope to see all of the friends we’ve been missing so much for the past 8 years (you all know who you are). If you’re in the Gulf Coast/Florida Panhandle area, this is a really fun show to check out with a lot of amazing guests, so I encourage you to join us there. You have no idea how happy I will be to get away from the gloom and snow.

I should mention, our co-producer on the Heavy Metal Revisited documentary we’re doing, Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot, was nominated for an Oscar this year for his documentary about Holocaust survivor and the world’s oldest pianist Alice Herz Sommer in “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.” Keep your fingers crossed that his film wins – we’re very proud of his hard work.

If you’re lucky enough to attend Angouleme this year, you may run into Magnetic Press’ publisher Mike Kennedy, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am very excited about this, and will have more to share soon.

In other random brain droppings, Denise & I started watching the French horror drama, The Returned, and it’s really addictive. I think we binge watched 5 episodes in one night. Our other new TV addictions are HBO’s True Detective, and NBC thriller Black List with James Spader is a lot of fun. Of course, we’re glad to see Sherlock back on air, and are looking forward to Walking Dead soon as well.

What are you all watching lately? Got any good leads for us? We’d love to hear what you like out there, too.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

My Friend Clydene Nee Needs Your Help

Dear Friends,

I call Clydene Nee “The Patron Saint of Artists.” She has helped so many artists over the years–myself included–at Artists Alley in San Diego Comic Con to have a very public presence and launch their careers. A modest but accomplished talent who always preferred to remain behind the scenes, she has never asked for anything in return. Her satisfaction was always derived from selflessly help others. Today I am asking on her behalf. Clydene needs a new kidney and is undergoing dialysis. Unfortunately, the medical powers that be, who admit she MUST have a new kidney to survive, don’t deem it enough of a must to put her high on the donor list. As you can imagine, her medical bills are ratcheting up. Artist Mark Brooks and his wife took the initiative to set up an online fundraiser for Clydene, and the artist community cannot thank them enough. Here is a link so you might help her, too: http://www.gofundme.com/67bolc

In other news, my friend Joel Meadows let me know that Tripwire Magazine now has an iPad app available, so I’ve downloaded it and I think it’s great, so here’s a link to that for you:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/tripwire-magazine-comics%20film/id717140470?mt=8&ls=1

For those of you with iPhones or iPads, my writer friends Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson (of video game Hitman Absolution fame) have a horror fantasy comic called 13 COINS with Simon Bisley’s mind-blowing 3D covers and interior art, so you might want to check that out. It’s available via an app in the iTunes store for just 99 cents. Martin Brennan will be here in Chicago for C2E2, so I’ll be happy to connect him with you if you’re attending the show the end of April. Here’s a link to it:

In other news, I’ll be in Pensacola the end of February for PensaCon. Check out their guest list and you’ll see what this is a great show. I’m excited to go, since I haven’t been back there since we moved to Chicago in 2005, so it will be great to reconnect with longtime friends like author Del Stone Jr. , Mike Suchcicki, attorney Bruce McDonald, blogger Kelly Henry Keathley, author Alessandra Torre, Dave and Denise Daughtry, Tom Roush, Kris Lagerloef, Jason Kennedy, Joy and Ron Todd, the Shalimar Pointe friends and many more.

As always, I thank you for reading. Remember Clydene.

Cyber Monday Special: Dave Dorman Art Poker Cards! And #SWTOR News!

Cards and Games!! These are my topics for a Happy Cyber Monday, Everybody!
I am throwing this quick blog together since you’re on the computer anyway ordering your Holiday gifts. I have two pieces of news to mention this time around:
Many of you know that I play the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic (aka SWTOR) nightly. It’s a wonderful adventure/fighting game with a great feel for the Star Wars universe. You can be a Sith Warrior, a Republic Commando, and even a Jedi! I really enjoy my hours spent in the world of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away!” (And a quick shout-out to my guildmates in PURGE on the “Bastion” server!)
So here’s what happened: SWTOR has a robust array of costuming and armor supplies for your character. I opened the game a few weeks ago and noticed new armors added to the game. And there was one set that looked very familiar. It was Ulic Qel-Droma from “Tales of the Jedi,” which was a character I designed for Dark Horse and painted on quite a few TOTJ Comic and graphic novel covers. Below you will see one of my paintings (TOTJ #1) with Ulic Qel-Droma, and dropped in, you will see the character screen shots from the game. Nice job and a huge honor, SWTOR designers!! (And SWTOR design team, if you ever need more costume, creature, or character designs I’m just an email away!)
ulic blog
My second piece of news is also game-related!  DRIVE THRU CARDS is now offering exclusive Dave Dorman art standard Poker deck cards! Talk about the perfect stocking stuffers! The first set is available now for just $7.99 per deck (plus postage), featuring my cover art from the Wastedlands RAIL Graphic Novel!
Dorman Rail back sample
You can order directly from Drive Thru Cards here.  I will be adding new card decks with my artwork in the next few weeks, so keep watching here for me to post the news. I have the proof set in my hands, and the quality is superb.
Make sure to soak your fingers in Palmolive after all your Cybershopping activity today! Thanks all, be well!

Dear Friends,

I will be doing a children’s learn-to-draw teaching demo event with Barnes & Noble in West Dundee, Illinois (Spring Hill Mall) on Friday, November 22nd from 5 – 7 p.m.  This is a chance for children ages 5 – 12 to learn “How to Draw Star Wars Art.” I will be presenting this demo and coaching attendees on their drawing skills.  If you live in the Chicagoland area and are looking for a really engaged bookstore offering family-friendly events, check out this particular Barnes & Noble.

In other news, I am continuing my pre-holiday sale on my convention Giclee’ prints – just $25, since I won’t be doing any more conventions until 2014, so buy them here: http://www.davedorman.com/dormanartprints.shtml

If you’re in the Midwest and looking for a family-friendly comic book convention, Indy PopCon in Indianapolis May 30 – June 1st will be the show to attend. This new show is run by my friend Larry Zore, of Comics Price Guide fame. If you’re an artist or vendor interested in being a part of Indy PopCon, please contact denise@writebrainmedia.com. Indianapolis is a really cool city to check out, and they have a wonderful children’s museum there.

Remember to check out the critically acclaimed horror comic “The Other Dead” Issue #2 – it’s getting really fun as the tension builds. Issue #3 will be out soon as well. The Other Dead Issue #1 is sold out and reprints are in transition. The Other Dead Synopsis: Louisiana is Ground Zero for the animal kingdom to become zombified, as a Katrina-like hurricane bears down on Louisiana.

I was pleased to hear that the Joliet Star Wars Day Library Event I’ve been participating in the last three years has grown to become the largest worldwide according to Lucasfilm, so that’s great news for the City of Joliet.

I’m in the throes of clearing out my garage this week and I rediscovered my QVC appearance, so I will be digitizing that to throw online for you to have a good laugh. I also found my WEAR-TV (Pensacola ABC affiliate) appearance on BETA, so I’ll have to find someone to reformat it. I’m still missing my SciFi Channel appearance, so if anyone out there has video of it, I’d like to see it again.

Have a great Sunday & thanks for reading,

Dear Friends,

I hope you are all enjoying a Happy Labor Day! Our 8-year-old son Jack proudly hung our American flag  in front of the house first thing this morning, and we’re hitting a barbecue in a few hours, so a fairly traditional day over here. And now, here’s my latest news:

My Wasted Lands/RAIL project: The IRON WARS Game by the team at Silent Gunfight (Mike Bawden and Tim Bawden) is coming along nicely. We will have a playable prototype to show at New York Comic Con, which Mike Bawden and I will be attending in person this year! I will be joining the Artists Alley section with Kevin Eastman, Joshua Ortega and Digger T. Mesch, all of  whom I partnered with in a variant President Obama cover for their The Other Dead comic book by IDW Publishing, plus I’ll be promoting my creator-owned work http://wastedlands.com.

Since this is Labor Day, I thought I would share with you some of my thoughts on the fruits of my labor–my art work. During the 30 years of my art career, I taught myself many mediums to stay on top of my game. When I decided to begin painting, I blindly chose oil paints, because that’s what I thought painters used. I was very much a novice and didn’t know about acrylics. (Besides, my most influential artist at that time Frank Frazetta, worked in oils.) I taught myself how to paint with oils and used that medium almost exclusively for 20 years, before finally feeling comfortable with them!

I began experimenting with acrylics, markers and pencils as mediums to augment my work about 10 years ago, and I’ve been very happy with the results. However the Digital/CGI Age came creeping up. I have attempted to keep it to the side, as I felt the art and imagery I was producing could hold its own against digital art. However, today I’m finding  in many instances, I am losing work opportunities and being marginalized by editors and art directors because I am NOT producing digital art. While I see no difference between a digital image and a traditionally painted image as the end result–the art should speak for itself, not the medium it was produced in–there are some art directors and editors who turn away the moment they learn your specific art is NOT produced digitally, even though they want to hire you based on your specific style and your previous traditional body of art pieces. (I have very strong opinions on this, and you can hear them in this interview with Hypno Comics owner George Chasehttp://www.itscomicbookday.com/2013/05/meet-dave-dorman-part-2/ )

To remain competitive in today’s field, I am now being forced to learn a new tool–the digital tool. I have researched what I will need to work digitally, which is mainly software and a tablet. I have decided to get a CINTIQ tablet because that will offer me a more natural feel like traditional work;  I will be able to watch my hand paint on the tablet surface without having to look up at a monitor from a separate tablet surface.  I will work with PAINTER and PHOTOSHOP to start out, so if you are one of my many digital artist friends, don’t be surprised if you get a call in the middle of the night asking for help or tips!

To fund this costly move to digital, I am offering my fans the rare opportunity to grab just a few of my ORIGINAL STAR WARS PAINTINGS for sale at a cost of just $2,000 each. These are STAR WARS paintings that have been used as covers for Dark Horse Comics. I don’t usually offer my original paintings on my blog, but I felt this would be the best way to get the word out that these pieces are available, and to offer to my fans an exclusive opportunity to purchase some art without having to travel to a convention or signing. The art is listed on my webpage http://www.davedorman.com/sworiginalart.shtml with purchase buttons for PAYPAL. These are one-of-a-kind paintings, not prints.

All of these original  pieces are oil and acrylic on gessoed illustration board. They are 20″ x 30″ in size. Take a look at the art below and visit the webpage. If you have any questions please feel free to email me directly dormanart@yahoo.com.
