Dear Friends,

My friend and fellow artist Charlie Athanas posted this on Facebook, and I thought you might be interested to see a piece I did at a WildClaw Theatre fundraising event called “Dance of the Demented” in 2010. As you will note, I did a much looser style of painting here and I was pleased with the result. Let me know what you think of it?

Here’s the original photograph:

Dave Dorman News: Announcing the WASTED LANDS Omnibus by Magnetic Press

Posted in Collectibles, Collections, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Comic Book Convention, Comic Book Cover Art, Comic Books, DAVE DORMAN ART FOR SALE, DAVE DORMAN NEWS, Entertainment, Geek, Geek Culture, Horror, Horror Art, Illustration, Mike Kennedy, Nerd Culture, Painting, Pop Culture, The Uninvited, Wasted Lands with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 18, 2014 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

First off, I need to be sure to mention that I, artists Douglas Klauba and Aaron B. Miller will all be speaking at HEVANSTON GALLERY in Evanston, IL at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd, EARTH DAY. Since we artists all work from home and save so much of the rest of the world’s carbon footprint, I think you should join us in celebrating that on Earth Day. Charlie Athanas, the gallery’s curator, will be hosting our lecture. That address is HEVANSTON GALLERY, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL 60201.

Now I want to share with you info on my creator-owned series, THE WASTED LANDS, which is now a new book, the WASTED LANDS Omnibus, published by Magnetic Press and publisher Mike Kennedy. It’s a huge honor to share this with all of you, and I think Mike Kennedy has done an amazing job. If you’ve noticed me rather silent lately on social media, it’s because I’ve been working so hard to meet this deadline–I’m still working hard on it–to get every comic book page recolored and relettered. I hope you all enjoy the end result:

When GEEK Worlds Collide: ProofX Is Premiering My WASTED LANDS Character in 3D Printout at MacWorld Tomorrow

Dear Friends,

I’m excited to announce that Dima Elissa, CEO of ProofX in Chicago will be presenting the world premiere of the 3D print-out of my WASTED LANDS villainous character THE HOLLOW MAN at MacWorld  tomorrow as part of her presentation at 11:40 a.m. titled “3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping: For Macs and Medicine.” I was very fortunate to work with fellow artist Dave Taylor of Imagination Rendered in Valparaiso, Florida, who did the 3D sculpting of my HOLLOW MAN character, based on my concept art.  I was also fortunate to work with Nuha Nazy at ProofX in getting the logistics managed and the 3D printed piece produced in time for MacWorld – it was a bit of a whirlwind this past weekend on top of my appearance at REEL ART in Berwyn. (A special thanks to Corey, Robert Garcia and the team who put that event together.) Anyhow, I hope my WASTED LANDS creature is well received and if you’re in the MacWorld audience, tomorrow, send me photos or footage of the presentation since they’re not streaming it for the general public. If you haven’t already, please “Like” my WASTED LANDS Fan Page: http://facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands. Here’s the concept art for my HOLLOW MAN character:

Dima Elissa will be hosting an Open House at her ProofX location on April 8th at 1001 University Place in Evanston, IL from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I hope those of you in Chicagoland can join us there. (Just don’t look for me there at 7 a.m.!)

Additionally, I will be participating in a 3-man art show on April 4th at Hevanston Art Gallery, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL curated by my longtime friend and collaborator Charlie Athanas. Joining me will be my good friends and artist colleagues, Douglas Klauba (you’ve seen Doug’s “Stella 7” art on Howard Wolowitz’s bedroom wall  if you’ve ever watched “Big Bang Theory”) and Aaron B. Miller

This week I’m working hard on meeting my deadline for Mike Kennedy, publisher of Magnetic Press, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con, so be sure to watch for that – I’ve recolored all of the art from my first graphic novel, RAIL: BROKEN THINGS, as well as the SKINNERS story that first appeared in PENTHOUSE COMICS. I am also creating new art for the book.

Here’s Where You Can Find Me in 2014:

April 10, 11, 12, 13, 14: I’ll be a judge again this year in the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards in Hollywood in mid-April, so if you need to meet with me while out there, contact denise@writebrainmedia.com and she will work hard to get you on my calendar. If you want to see me look ridiculous in a tuxedo, watch the awards ceremony streaming live that Sunday the 13th.

April 25, 26, 27 –  I will be exhibiting in Artists Alley at C2E2 in Chicago at McCormick Place

May 9, 10. 11 – Find me at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live in Kansas City, KS.

May 30, 31, and June 1: I will be exhibiting at Indy PopCon in Indianapolis, IN – this show is curated by Larry Zore of Comics Price Guide and it is a family-friendly show.

June 7: I will be signing at Joliet Star Wars Day at the Joliet Public Library – this is the World’s Largest Star Wars Library Event, so come on out.

July 24, 25, 26, 27 – I will be exhibiting at Booth #4500 at San Diego Comic-Con. Joining me will be Mike and Tim Bawden of SILENT GUNFIGHT with their WASTED LANDS Board Game, IRON WARS, plus a new WASTED LANDS card game called RED TIDE, and Steve Smith of ALAXIS PRESS, publisher of THE LEANING GIRL – the first book from THE OBSCURE CITIES series, published in English for the first time, who will join me with SDCC featured guests writer Benoit Peeters and artist Francois Schuiten.

August 14, 15, 16, 17th – I will be attending GenCon in Indianapolis – I’m not sure yet if we’re exhibiting there with SILENT GUNFIGHT.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

DAVE.

Some Interviews I Did This Past Week – Video & Print

Dear Friends,

I’ve decided to get better about posting my interviews since many of you probably don’t see them unless I mention them, so this past week, I did two – one with Shawn Hopman of Nerdgasm.net in print, and one with host Carlos Phoenix of The Lounge Network. Here are those two links for you:

The Nerdgasm Interview:  http://nerdgasms.net/interview-with-illustrator-legend-dave-dorman/

The Lounge Network Video Interview: http://www.theloungenetwork.com/2014/02/02/dave-dorman-stars-wars-dungeons-dragons-lounge-interview/

The weekend of February 21 , 22 and 23rd, we will be in Pensacola for PensaCon, so Denise and I hope to see all of the friends we’ve been missing so much for the past 8 years (you all know who you are). If you’re in the Gulf Coast/Florida Panhandle area, this is a really fun show to check out with a lot of amazing guests, so I encourage you to join us there. You have no idea how happy I will be to get away from the gloom and snow.

I should mention, our co-producer on the Heavy Metal Revisited documentary we’re doing, Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot, was nominated for an Oscar this year for his documentary about Holocaust survivor and the world’s oldest pianist Alice Herz Sommer in “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.” Keep your fingers crossed that his film wins – we’re very proud of his hard work.

If you’re lucky enough to attend Angouleme this year, you may run into Magnetic Press’ publisher Mike Kennedy, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am very excited about this, and will have more to share soon.

In other random brain droppings, Denise & I started watching the French horror drama, The Returned, and it’s really addictive. I think we binge watched 5 episodes in one night. Our other new TV addictions are HBO’s True Detective, and NBC thriller Black List with James Spader is a lot of fun. Of course, we’re glad to see Sherlock back on air, and are looking forward to Walking Dead soon as well.

What are you all watching lately? Got any good leads for us? We’d love to hear what you like out there, too.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dear Friends,

I will be doing a children’s learn-to-draw teaching demo event with Barnes & Noble in West Dundee, Illinois (Spring Hill Mall) on Friday, November 22nd from 5 – 7 p.m.  This is a chance for children ages 5 – 12 to learn “How to Draw Star Wars Art.” I will be presenting this demo and coaching attendees on their drawing skills.  If you live in the Chicagoland area and are looking for a really engaged bookstore offering family-friendly events, check out this particular Barnes & Noble.

In other news, I am continuing my pre-holiday sale on my convention Giclee’ prints – just $25, since I won’t be doing any more conventions until 2014, so buy them here: http://www.davedorman.com/dormanartprints.shtml

Here’s the art demo piece I did for Blick Art Supplies last weekend – a zombie Stormtrooper (photography by Kim Evans Worley):

If you’re in the Midwest and looking for a family-friendly comic book convention, Indy PopCon in Indianapolis May 30 – June 1st will be the show to attend. This new show is run by my friend Larry Zore, of Comics Price Guide fame. If you’re an artist or vendor interested in being a part of Indy PopCon, please contact denise@writebrainmedia.com. Indianapolis is a really cool city to check out, and they have a wonderful children’s museum there.

Remember to check out the critically acclaimed horror comic “The Other Dead” Issue #2 – it’s getting really fun as the tension builds. Issue #3 will be out soon as well. The Other Dead Issue #1 is sold out and reprints are in transition. The Other Dead Synopsis: Louisiana is Ground Zero for the animal kingdom to become zombified, as a Katrina-like hurricane bears down on Louisiana.

I was pleased to hear that the Joliet Star Wars Day Library Event I’ve been participating in the last three years has grown to become the largest worldwide according to Lucasfilm, so that’s great news for the City of Joliet.

I’m in the throes of clearing out my garage this week and I rediscovered my QVC appearance, so I will be digitizing that to throw online for you to have a good laugh. I also found my WEAR-TV (Pensacola ABC affiliate) appearance on BETA, so I’ll have to find someone to reformat it. I’m still missing my SciFi Channel appearance, so if anyone out there has video of it, I’d like to see it again.

If you have a moment and you haven’t already, please “Like” my Facebook Fan Pages. They are as follows:

Have a great Sunday & thanks for reading,

For my many Indian friends, I wish you a Happy Diwali this weekend. We will be celebrating Diwali with our Indian friends at our home on Sunday. This may be the first brunch where I’ve had to forgo bacon, but I’ll take one for the team for friends.

Dear Friends,

This week I had a couple of nice press mentions. The first was a podcast interview with “From the Booth” which is sponsored by Captain Blue Hen Comics. You can listen to that interview here: http://bitly.com/Zgk25t

The second was a nice press mention on my Star Wars Dark Empire covers from Ryan Britt of Tor.com. You can access that review and the comment I posted back here: http://bitly.com/Y6dZ8x

There are a couple of Kickstarter campaigns you might want to check out, if you’re interested in supporting them. I am providing artwork for British magazine TRIPWIRE’s 21st Anniversary Issue of their Magazine. I think you’ll recognize my work in the graphic below. That link is here: http://kck.st/10Ic33G

TRIPWIRE 21st Anniversary Magazine

TRIPWIRE 21st Anniversary Magazine

The second Kickstarter campaign I have no connection to, other than I think it’s cool and a game-changer for all of the model and prop making friends and enthusiasts (like me) who follow me here. These guys have created a fail-proof plug & play special f/x kit for your models and props – everything from batteries & lighting to smoke to sound f/x. Check that out here: http://kck.st/XxshQn I really hope they get funded. Again, this is a game changer.

Next weekend I will be joining friends Larry Elmore and Kevin J. Anderson in L.A. judging the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards. I am told it’s televised in L.A., so if you want to catch me looking uncomfortable in a monkey suit (that is, tux–I won’t be dressing in a Planet of the Apes costume, which it just occurred to me you might be expecting), please tune in.

Right now I am finishing up a labor of love – a story for Dave Elliott’s MONSTER MASSACRE book that will feature my protagonist motorcycle zombie character, HITCH, which some of you may remember from my book, the Bram Stoker nominated, Int’l Horror Guild Assoc. winner in 1996 from Mojo Press, “DEAD HEAT.” Unfortunately we (Del Stone Jr. and I) were way ahead of the times, writing about zombies before the production world caught on to their money-making potential. Publisher’s Weekly said “Hitch, the protagonist of this gonzo post-apocalyptic fantasy, may be the most outrageous superhero ever conceived for the printed page: a meathook-wielding zombie whose exertions repeatedly challenge him to overcome the limitations of his deteriorating body.”

I will be exhibiting in Artist’s Alley at C2E2 this year in Chicago, so I hope you can come out. Reed Exhibits does a really solid job with this show and it’s quickly becoming the Comic-Con of the Midwest, so check it out. I have to dig up my table #, so watch for me to post that on Facebook – my fan page is http://facebook.com/davedormanfanpage, so please “Like” my page when you get a moment. I am at my 5k limit with friends on my personal FB page, so my apologies for that inconvenience.

Lastly, if you are interested in being one of the “Lucky 10” at “THE DAVE DORMAN EXPERIENCE” this year, please write to denise@writebrainmedia.com for your reservation. Cost is $350 and I blogged about all of the fun swag you will receive, including the potential of winning a fresh Dave Dorman painting, in the last blog post, so check that out. We will need to know your answer quickly, as it takes a while to get t-shirts made.

As always, thanks for reading,

DAVE.
