Hi Everyone,

Opening day for the new STAR WARS movie! Yay! I’ve been looking forward to 10:30 p.m. tonight for a long time. This weekend I will be doing a STAR WARS signing for DREAMLAND COMICS at STRATFORD SQUARE MALL in BLOOMINGDALE, IL. Here’s a link to their address and phone #: https://dreamlandcomics.com. This is the comic book shop I patronize here in Illinois.

And now for my other news — I’ve launched an exclusive line of greeting cards through a Logica3.com company called SAVE A TREE CARDS.com in West Dundee, IL near where I live. Here’s the link — https://holiday.saveatreecards.com — currently they are solely digital cards, but recycled, paper-based cards are forthcoming. I want to extend a special thanks to Lisa Page Domwbrowski and Larry Dombrowski for giving me this opportunity to share my personal art. Here’s a link to that press release: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2017/12/prweb15014023.htm

This new line of Dorman greeting cards are a departure from my typical licensed commercial work that you are familiar with, but I really enjoy painting non-licensed art. Also on their site are links to the art tutorial videos I created of me painting their greeting card designs. They’ve shrunk them down to 12 and six minutes, so if you don’t want to sit through the 2-hour versions, these are truncated. Here’s an example of the art you’ll see me painting:

As always, thank you for reading.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you to all who are sending me birthday wishes. While I am getting another year older and my body sure feels every year of it…I am happy I am still here to share it with you and my family. Most of all, I am feeling like I am entering a new phase of my artistic career.

I feel excited about the work I am doing now. It is truly the best work of my entire career. I am learning more about myself and new techniques my eyes have been opened to on my path of discovery. Even though it has been seriously hard to find work in the industry these days, I am grateful that I have all of you all as my fans and supporters as I move into this more creative era of my art. That in itself lights a creative fire in me to follow the work that pushes me, enlightens me and strengthens me as an artist. It helps me to be a better person.

Thank you ALL for this.

Also… 😛 I have a few new pieces available I thought I’d post for your enjoyment and interest. Here is the page with PayPal buttons if you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces I’m posting here today:

Hi Everybody,

I hope to see many of you this weekend at C2E2 in Chicago; I’ll be at Table E-1 in Artists Alley!

Before I forget to mention this, if you’re not already watching HAP & LEONARD on the Sundance Channel (Season 1 is on Netflix), please check it out. My author friend Joe R. Lansdale wrote this really fun, pulpy series of books, all of which I’ve read, and he is executive producer on the show. It’s pure genius in its acting, casting and execution. I hope it never ends. (Joe’s steampunk series is really fun, too. Can you tell I’m his biggest fan?)

If you haven’t heard already, I’ve been doing live paintings on Facebook Live. I plan to expand this to Twitter’s Periscope and YouTube eventually, but here is a link to my most popular one so far, of me painting Darth Maul. According to Facebook, it has gotten 56,633 cumulative views so far! The visitor stamp you see at the bottom is how many folks were watching it when I actually did it live. I am honored by your time and attention. (If only I had 50 cents for everyone who watched it!)

SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDBACK: With social media, I’m always listening. Sometimes the feedback is rather unpleasant, like this exchange below. That being said, if I’ve ever come across as unpleasant to any of you, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to you, as I did to these gentlemen. From what I gather from their latter remarks, these two gents haven’t ever actually personally interacted with me, but if this is the current zeitgeist on me, I’d like to nip it in the bud. Shows are exhausting and physically taxing, and you may see my occasional grimace, especially with my current sciatica and neuropathy issues, but I don’t ever want any of you to feel like I don’t want you to approach me or that I don’t value your friendship, feedback and encounters, because I do. Without your feedback, good or bad, my work doesn’t feel complete. You all help me to “close the loop.”

ALIENS 30th Anniversary commemorative art work-in-progress painting by Dave Dorman for NYCC 2016 Launch

Rohita Shah Interviews #1 Star Wars Artist Dave Dorman:

RS: Can you share with our readers your connection to Mathnasium Whitefish Bay?

DD: You (owners Kal and Rohita Shah) are like family to us, and our sons have been best friends since kindergarten. In fact, Kal and I coached their football team together, which remains a very happy memory for me. I’d never been to Whitefish Bay until you moved there, and in a perfect world, outside of my home in Florida, I’d be living in Whitefish Bay. I like that it’s a community where you can walk to everything you need, and nearby Milwaukee is a great city with a great art museum.

RS: What will attendees of the Mathnasium Whitefish Bay event on October 2nd, 2016 experience?
DD: I’m going to teach drawing geometric shapes and how they can be easily transformed into your favorite STAR WARS characters. I will be doing two classes–one at 11 a.m. and one at 2 p.m. Additionally, I’ll have my prints for sale–Star Wars, Batman, Alien, you name it– and I’ll sign anything anyone brings for me to autograph. Autographs are always free.
RS: What projects have you done lately or are working on now?
DD: I’m working on STAR WARS comic book covers for Marvel Comics, superhero trading cards for Upper Deck, and a commemorative ALIENS print for the 30th anniversary of the 2nd  ALIENS film. This piece premieres at New York Comic Con on October 6th. I’m also taking in requests and doing a lot of commissioned art for fans worldwide.
RS: What advice would you give young artists?
DD: The main advice I’d give them is to draw as much as they can. The more you draw, the better you get. Draw everything, not just what you like to draw. A good artist should be able to easily draw whatever they’re being asked to draw by an art director or client.
RS: Do you recommend any art schools?
DD: That’s such a personal choice, depending on your particular focus. I’d spend time evaluating each program to find the one best fitting your direction. I had a false start at St. Mary’s College in Maryland, where I majored in art and they had me doing these large, contemporary art gallery pieces, which was not at all my interest. I switched schools my sophomore year and attended the Joe Kubert School in Dover, NJ. That school taught me comic book illustration, which is what I thought I wanted, but then I realized, I was geared more towards telling a whole story with one single illustration, which led me to doing cover art. It was only the Kubert School’s second year in operation, so Joe Kubert advised me to graduate early (he said they’d already taught me everything they could) and he encouraged me to go on my own to learn color illustration. My color work is self taught, but it all boils down to the amount time I spent in front of my drawing board. It took me until I was 25 to sell my first piece, the Heavy Metal magazine cover I did.

Dear Friends,

Punxsutawney Phil tells me Spring is just around the corner!  And with Spring comes the beginning of CONVENTION SEASON. I will be doing at least one show per month in 2016, so please keep your browser set here for updates.

And no, that goofy guy Scott Roush from the Bleeding Cool News article is NOT my rep (thanks for the heads up, Rich Johnston!), nor is he booking me at any conventions. For the record, my only booking agents are Denise McDonald Dorman of WriteBrain Media and Mike Alexandropoulos.

My first show of the year will take me to Pensacola, Florida for PENSACONFebruary 19th – 21st. I will have prints and books for sale, and as always my autograph is FREE!

I’ve just produced a special edition of my sketchbook series LEADWORKS. This year I will be doing a Star Wars-centric edition. This book will feature all pencil drawings.. roughs, finished art and many unpublished pieces going back 25 years to my first SW works with Dark Horse Comics right up to my current work with Marvel and some NEW never before seen drawings from SW: The Force Awakens.

LEADWORKS by Dave Dorman, Ltd. Edition

LEADWORKS by Dave Dorman, Ltd. Edition

This special book will be 36 pages (previous editions were 24 pages) with a card stock cover and high quality interior pages to show off the detail in the pencil renderings. It is 5.5″ x 8.5″ same size as previous editions. For those of you who love Adult Coloring Books, here’s your chance to color my work! I’d love to see what you do with it and I hope you share it here!

Unlike the previous editions, I will be doing a LIMITED SIGNED AND NUMBERED run of this book, limited to 400 copies. This will be the only version I will be printing. However, I am not raising the price. It will remain at $20.00 (postage included, worldwide). The book will be ready to ship the 3rd week of February.

You can order your copy at this link on my website http://www.davedorman.com/leadworks3.shtml (If you would like to order more than one, the Paypal cart will let you choose how many you would like).

I have done quite a few new drawings for myself featuring charaters and elements from the new Star Wars film SW: The Force Awakens. All of these are unpublished; however, I will be showing quite a few of them in LEADWORKS.
I am putting a few of my pencils sketches up for sale right now so you can get a sneak preview of my new art… AND you can add it to your collection!

#MTFBWY!!!
The excitement runs high in our house as my son Jack and I get ready to go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens tonight! Oh…did you not know there was a new Star Wars movie coming out this weekend? It’s true!!! And we hope the force is strong with J.J. Abrams and company. TomorrowFriday the 18th, I will be doing a video review for my son’s YouTube channel. It will be fun, and I PROMISE that it will be spoiler free!
Here is a link to a recent interview I did with Jamie and Justin at  Geek Dad regarding my Star Wars art career: http://geekdad.com/2015/12/gbbp-42-dave-dorman/
Quite a number of you have asked if I was going to be painting any art for the new Star Wars film or maybe even doing a fan movie poster piece. While I have not produced any licensed work for the film, obviously the imagery screams for me to do something. I would love to do a movie poster style piece but I felt I could not do the film justice until I had seen it. So now that I am about to experience it tonight, don’t be surprised if you see a poster-type piece done in the near future.

However, I have been trying to work on two pieces these past couple of months. Unfortunately, I could not find time to finish them in time for the movie premiere. I will continue working on these over the holidays and will share them with you when they are complete. The first is a portrait of Rey and BB8 on the planet of Jakku. The second piece I am having fun with. It is taken from the very famous line in the first movie (the fourth, for you completists) Star Wars: A New Hope. The title of this piece: “Is This the Droid We are Looking For?” Hope you like the sneak peek of this fun, upcoming art:

I once again have worked with M&M Comics in San Antonio, producing variant covers for two of the most anticipated books of the season... Marvel’s VADER DOWN and DC Comics’ DARK KNIGHT 3.

I am offering these for presale now with the release of DK3 on Nov. 11th and VADER DOWN on Nov. 25.

The main reason I am offering these together at this time is to allow you, my valued fans, the opportunity to make your purchases wisely with the holiday season coming up quickly , and not be surprised by a new book coming up that you might not be able to afford because you bought another book earlier. These are the last set of variants I will be producing thru’ the end of the year, so there will be no other Dorman variants upcoming after these (at least for now)

I am offering the books as individual purchases, sets of each title, or a complete set of the 4 books at a discounted price. The pricing is as follows (includes shipping and tracking):

DARK KNIGHT 3 Color Variant $15.00
DARK KNIGHT 3 Pencil Variant $25.00

VADER DOWN  Color Variant $15.00
VADER DOWN  Pencil Variant $25.00

VADER DOWN Both books $30.00

AND… as a special HALLOWEEN TREAT (and extended thru’ my son Jack’s birthday,… the boy needs new shoes) all orders of the full set of 4 books will get a copy of my ARCHIE # 1 Variant AND my SPIDER-GWEN #1 variant for FREE!!! 6 books variants for $60.00!! Now THAT’s a treat if I ever heard one!

All books will be signed by me, of course. They will be bagged and boarded unopened directly from the distributor. Books will be sent out by me the week after they hit the stands; however, if you ordered the set of 4, I will send them out after VADER DOWN is released (the week of Nov.30)

Here’s the order page:

Thanks again for all your support of my work and I hope everyone has a safe HALLOWEEN and continued health and safety through the upcoming holidays!

Hi Everyone!
I have a fun collectible to offer you. As some of you know, I had the distinct pleasure of doing a variant cover for one of the comics world’s most famous
characters… ARCHIE! Click here to order directly from me now: http://davedorman.com/dormanARCHIE1variant.shtml
ARCHIE COMICS Variant Cover #1 from Dave Dorman for M&M Comics

ARCHIE COMICS Variant Cover #1 from Dave Dorman for M&M Comics

Archie Publications is relaunching “Archie” in July 2015 with a new focus–bringing him and all of our favorite Riverdale characters into the 21st century. While I have been a fan of Archie since I was a kid, he was never a character that I ever thought I would paint. I tend to be more into the sci-fi/fantasy/horror comics genre, and Archie tended towards the more cartoony style. But with this change from Archie’s editors to bring a new look, I took the opportunity from M&M Comics (the retailer I
did the wildly successful Marvel Comics Star Wars #1 Variant cover with) to produce a more realistically painted cover for Archie #1. It was great fun and a great honor to make this comics icon look like he stepped into the real world.
This M&M Retailer Variant will only be available from myself and M&M Comics. The book will hit the stands on July 8; however, I am offering a pre-release sale of the Archie Variant #1 Comic Book. You can order the book directly from me, bagged and boarded, and PERSONALLY AUTOGRAPHED by me. The cost of the book is $15 plus $5 shipping. You can order as many as you like. AND AS AN EXTRA BONUS, only available through direct ordering from me, you will receive an EXCLUSIVE mini-print of the original pencil version of the cover art, also signed by me. This print will not be offered anywhere else. This edition is limited to ONLY 1,750 copies (and I only have a portion of these to sell personally) so please do not hesitate to order if you would like your own copy for your collection.
What: Archie Comics Variant #1 by Dave Dorman, personally autographed by Dave Dorman, bagged and boarded.
Cost: $15 plus $5 Shipping
Limit: None! Order as many as you like!
Extra Bonus Available Here Only: An exclusive mini-print of the original pencil version of the cover art, also autographed by Dave Dorman!
Link to Order: http://davedorman.com/dormanARCHIE1variant.shtml
I will ship the orders out the week of July 13 (as I will be at San Diego Comic Con Booth #4500 during the store release) and you will receive a tracking number when your order goes out. Thanks again for your support of my work and for sharing in this very fun and unexpected project with me!
