Some Interviews I Did This Past Week – Video & Print

Dear Friends,

I’ve decided to get better about posting my interviews since many of you probably don’t see them unless I mention them, so this past week, I did two – one with Shawn Hopman of Nerdgasm.net in print, and one with host Carlos Phoenix of The Lounge Network. Here are those two links for you:

The Nerdgasm Interview:  http://nerdgasms.net/interview-with-illustrator-legend-dave-dorman/

The Lounge Network Video Interview: http://www.theloungenetwork.com/2014/02/02/dave-dorman-stars-wars-dungeons-dragons-lounge-interview/

The weekend of February 21 , 22 and 23rd, we will be in Pensacola for PensaCon, so Denise and I hope to see all of the friends we’ve been missing so much for the past 8 years (you all know who you are). If you’re in the Gulf Coast/Florida Panhandle area, this is a really fun show to check out with a lot of amazing guests, so I encourage you to join us there. You have no idea how happy I will be to get away from the gloom and snow.

I should mention, our co-producer on the Heavy Metal Revisited documentary we’re doing, Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot, was nominated for an Oscar this year for his documentary about Holocaust survivor and the world’s oldest pianist Alice Herz Sommer in “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.” Keep your fingers crossed that his film wins – we’re very proud of his hard work.

If you’re lucky enough to attend Angouleme this year, you may run into Magnetic Press’ publisher Mike Kennedy, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am very excited about this, and will have more to share soon.

In other random brain droppings, Denise & I started watching the French horror drama, The Returned, and it’s really addictive. I think we binge watched 5 episodes in one night. Our other new TV addictions are HBO’s True Detective, and NBC thriller Black List with James Spader is a lot of fun. Of course, we’re glad to see Sherlock back on air, and are looking forward to Walking Dead soon as well.

What are you all watching lately? Got any good leads for us? We’d love to hear what you like out there, too.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dear Friends,
Happy winter, everyone!! I hope you are not buried in snow where you are. Here in Chicago, the unpleasant stuff is knee deep!
I’m relieved to say that my new studio over the garage is done finally, and I am happy with it overall. It is smaller, but definitely comfortable and there’s plenty of natural light coming in, which is any artist’s wish for his or her studio. During this move, I found a small Captain America piece in my flat files. It was a fun piece I did for a card set in the 1990s ( I wish I could remember which one) that featured my art on a nine-card subset of the “Best of Marvel” characters. I have been a big fan of Cap’s for a long time. Jack Kirby and Jim Steranko were great influences on my love for this character, so no doubt, I was happy to do an action portrait of this favorite hero!
I have decided to put this Captain America art up for sale and share it with some lucky fan.
Dave Dorman Captain America art.

  • The piece is 9″ x 7″ oil and acrylic on illustration board.
  • It is mounted and framed (under UV plexiglass) and ready to hang.
  • The price on this piece is $500, including overnight shipping and tracking
  • It is available on this page on my website:
  • As this is an original painting, there is only one, so the first fan to purchase it from the page gets it.
I have also made available a few new prints. These new offers include a couple of pieces that fans have been asking for at shows for a while:
  • The Dark Empire cover featuring the very serious “Dark Luke” figure.
  • The first cover to “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis,” which was the cover that got it all going for me with Dark Horse’s licensing.
  • And finally, the BATMAN overlooking Gotham from his gargoyle perch, used as a book cover for “The Batman Murders.”

These prints are listed on my “Prints for Sale” webpage here:
http://www.davedorman.com/dormanartprints.shtml.
Like the others available, they are $20 each.
I will have more news next time featuring an announcement about my Wasted Lands’ RAIL graphic novel! If you’re attending the Angouleme Comics Festival in France this year in February, be sure to look for Mike Kennedy of Magnetic Press, who will be making an announcement there.

As always, I thank you for reading!

Cyber Monday Special: Dave Dorman Art Poker Cards! And #SWTOR News!

Cards and Games!! These are my topics for a Happy Cyber Monday, Everybody!
I am throwing this quick blog together since you’re on the computer anyway ordering your Holiday gifts. I have two pieces of news to mention this time around:
Many of you know that I play the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic (aka SWTOR) nightly. It’s a wonderful adventure/fighting game with a great feel for the Star Wars universe. You can be a Sith Warrior, a Republic Commando, and even a Jedi! I really enjoy my hours spent in the world of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away!” (And a quick shout-out to my guildmates in PURGE on the “Bastion” server!)
So here’s what happened: SWTOR has a robust array of costuming and armor supplies for your character. I opened the game a few weeks ago and noticed new armors added to the game. And there was one set that looked very familiar. It was Ulic Qel-Droma from “Tales of the Jedi,” which was a character I designed for Dark Horse and painted on quite a few TOTJ Comic and graphic novel covers. Below you will see one of my paintings (TOTJ #1) with Ulic Qel-Droma, and dropped in, you will see the character screen shots from the game. Nice job and a huge honor, SWTOR designers!! (And SWTOR design team, if you ever need more costume, creature, or character designs I’m just an email away!)

My second piece of news is also game-related!  DRIVE THRU CARDS is now offering exclusive Dave Dorman art standard Poker deck cards! Talk about the perfect stocking stuffers! The first set is available now for just $7.99 per deck (plus postage), featuring my cover art from the Wastedlands RAIL Graphic Novel!
Dorman Rail back sample
You can order directly from Drive Thru Cards here.  I will be adding new card decks with my artwork in the next few weeks, so keep watching here for me to post the news. I have the proof set in my hands, and the quality is superb.
Make sure to soak your fingers in Palmolive after all your Cybershopping activity today! Thanks all, be well!

Hi Everyone,
I  hope life is treating you well! My studio is in an upheaval as I’m moving it to another area of the house. In readying for the big move, I’ve rediscovered art that’s just sitting in my flat files, so I’m offering it to you at VERY reasonable prices. This is a rare opportunity to collect originals at prices that won’t break your bank, just in time for the holidays. I will be adding and removing pieces every few days, so please keep an eye on this web page:  http://www.davedorman.com/originalartsale.shtml and this blog for new additions.  All of the pieces have PayPal buttons for easy purchase, and the info comes right to me, and my trusty shipping dept. (yours truly) will get the art out right away with tracking number emailed the day it ships.
I will also be offering some fun and unusual pieces from my personal collection, toys, books, etc.
First up: Limited Edition GI Joe Snake Eyes Life-Sized Bust: $300.00 + $25.00 shipping

The piece is in its original shipping box and the packaging has never been opened. If the buyer wishes for me to sign the box I would be happy to do so before shipping it.

Dear Friends,

I will be doing a children’s learn-to-draw teaching demo event with Barnes & Noble in West Dundee, Illinois (Spring Hill Mall) on Friday, November 22nd from 5 – 7 p.m.  This is a chance for children ages 5 – 12 to learn “How to Draw Star Wars Art.” I will be presenting this demo and coaching attendees on their drawing skills.  If you live in the Chicagoland area and are looking for a really engaged bookstore offering family-friendly events, check out this particular Barnes & Noble.

In other news, I am continuing my pre-holiday sale on my convention Giclee’ prints – just $25, since I won’t be doing any more conventions until 2014, so buy them here: http://www.davedorman.com/dormanartprints.shtml

Here’s the art demo piece I did for Blick Art Supplies last weekend – a zombie Stormtrooper (photography by Kim Evans Worley):

If you’re in the Midwest and looking for a family-friendly comic book convention, Indy PopCon in Indianapolis May 30 – June 1st will be the show to attend. This new show is run by my friend Larry Zore, of Comics Price Guide fame. If you’re an artist or vendor interested in being a part of Indy PopCon, please contact denise@writebrainmedia.com. Indianapolis is a really cool city to check out, and they have a wonderful children’s museum there.

Remember to check out the critically acclaimed horror comic “The Other Dead” Issue #2 – it’s getting really fun as the tension builds. Issue #3 will be out soon as well. The Other Dead Issue #1 is sold out and reprints are in transition. The Other Dead Synopsis: Louisiana is Ground Zero for the animal kingdom to become zombified, as a Katrina-like hurricane bears down on Louisiana.

I was pleased to hear that the Joliet Star Wars Day Library Event I’ve been participating in the last three years has grown to become the largest worldwide according to Lucasfilm, so that’s great news for the City of Joliet.

I’m in the throes of clearing out my garage this week and I rediscovered my QVC appearance, so I will be digitizing that to throw online for you to have a good laugh. I also found my WEAR-TV (Pensacola ABC affiliate) appearance on BETA, so I’ll have to find someone to reformat it. I’m still missing my SciFi Channel appearance, so if anyone out there has video of it, I’d like to see it again.

If you have a moment and you haven’t already, please “Like” my Facebook Fan Pages. They are as follows:

Have a great Sunday & thanks for reading,

Dear Friends,

I had a GREAT time at the DISCOVERY MUSEUM in Milwaukee with my 501st friends last weekend teaching people how I do what I do. (And yes, I AM available to give this lecture, teach demos, and do Q&As for your large group or students – for inquiries please contact my wife/publicist denise@writebrainmedia.com). Here’s an image from my lecture:

Tomorrow through Sunday: I will be at Detroit Fanfare, and I will be a presenter for the Shel Dorf Awards, so hopefully I’ll catch up with many of you at either event. Here’s a link for more information:  http://detroitfanfare.com/

Saturday November 2nd:  I will be teaching an art demo at BLICK ART SUPPLY in Wheaton, IL. This makes up for the one I had to miss earlier this fall.

This day also marks the grand opening of my friend J. Anthony Kosar’s MALEFICIUM DARK ART Exhibiton: http://www.kosartgallery.com/2013-maleficium-dark-art-exhibition.html - the grand opening is 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. on the 2nd, but the exhibit is available to tour by appointment only from 11/2 – 11/30.  You may recognize Anthony as he was a winner on last season’s SYFY show, FACE OFF. His f/x makeup is incredible, and if you are interested in learning from him, he teaches classes! Check him out1

Saturday November 3rd: Happy Diwali to my many Indian friends, and we celebrate my son’s 9th Birthday!

For a few weeks in November and possibly into December, things will be a little nutty here as I’m having a new studio built over the garage, so if I delay in getting back to you on something urgent, ping my wife/publicist at denise@writebrainmedia.com or call her at (630) 845-4694.

Dedicated Star Wars Fan Gets Dave Dorman Art Tattooed On Entire Back

Dear Friends,

Much to my surprise, posted on the Facebook 501st Legion Fan Page was a fan and tattoo artist (who was doing tattoos at Celebration in Germany) named Tomi Demolka, who permanently committed my art to his back – in particular, my Star Wars art piece, Lord Vader’s Persuasion of the Outer Rim. I’m sharing his images here – the Tattoo Artist is Sławek Fronczek from Tattoo.pl (Poznan, Poland), and I think he did a terrific job of capturing the art:

Dear Friends,

This week I had a couple of nice press mentions. The first was a podcast interview with “From the Booth” which is sponsored by Captain Blue Hen Comics. You can listen to that interview here: http://bitly.com/Zgk25t

The second was a nice press mention on my Star Wars Dark Empire covers from Ryan Britt of Tor.com. You can access that review and the comment I posted back here: http://bitly.com/Y6dZ8x

There are a couple of Kickstarter campaigns you might want to check out, if you’re interested in supporting them. I am providing artwork for British magazine TRIPWIRE’s 21st Anniversary Issue of their Magazine. I think you’ll recognize my work in the graphic below. That link is here: http://kck.st/10Ic33G

TRIPWIRE 21st Anniversary Magazine

TRIPWIRE 21st Anniversary Magazine

The second Kickstarter campaign I have no connection to, other than I think it’s cool and a game-changer for all of the model and prop making friends and enthusiasts (like me) who follow me here. These guys have created a fail-proof plug & play special f/x kit for your models and props – everything from batteries & lighting to smoke to sound f/x. Check that out here: http://kck.st/XxshQn I really hope they get funded. Again, this is a game changer.

Next weekend I will be joining friends Larry Elmore and Kevin J. Anderson in L.A. judging the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards. I am told it’s televised in L.A., so if you want to catch me looking uncomfortable in a monkey suit (that is, tux–I won’t be dressing in a Planet of the Apes costume, which it just occurred to me you might be expecting), please tune in.

Right now I am finishing up a labor of love – a story for Dave Elliott’s MONSTER MASSACRE book that will feature my protagonist motorcycle zombie character, HITCH, which some of you may remember from my book, the Bram Stoker nominated, Int’l Horror Guild Assoc. winner in 1996 from Mojo Press, “DEAD HEAT.” Unfortunately we (Del Stone Jr. and I) were way ahead of the times, writing about zombies before the production world caught on to their money-making potential. Publisher’s Weekly said “Hitch, the protagonist of this gonzo post-apocalyptic fantasy, may be the most outrageous superhero ever conceived for the printed page: a meathook-wielding zombie whose exertions repeatedly challenge him to overcome the limitations of his deteriorating body.”

I will be exhibiting in Artist’s Alley at C2E2 this year in Chicago, so I hope you can come out. Reed Exhibits does a really solid job with this show and it’s quickly becoming the Comic-Con of the Midwest, so check it out. I have to dig up my table #, so watch for me to post that on Facebook – my fan page is http://facebook.com/davedormanfanpage, so please “Like” my page when you get a moment. I am at my 5k limit with friends on my personal FB page, so my apologies for that inconvenience.

Lastly, if you are interested in being one of the “Lucky 10″ at “THE DAVE DORMAN EXPERIENCE” this year, please write to denise@writebrainmedia.com for your reservation. Cost is $350 and I blogged about all of the fun swag you will receive, including the potential of winning a fresh Dave Dorman painting, in the last blog post, so check that out. We will need to know your answer quickly, as it takes a while to get t-shirts made.

As always, thanks for reading,

DAVE.
