Some Interviews I Did This Past Week – Video & Print

Dear Friends,

I’ve decided to get better about posting my interviews since many of you probably don’t see them unless I mention them, so this past week, I did two – one with Shawn Hopman of Nerdgasm.net in print, and one with host Carlos Phoenix of The Lounge Network. Here are those two links for you:

The Nerdgasm Interview:  http://nerdgasms.net/interview-with-illustrator-legend-dave-dorman/

The Lounge Network Video Interview: http://www.theloungenetwork.com/2014/02/02/dave-dorman-stars-wars-dungeons-dragons-lounge-interview/

The weekend of February 21 , 22 and 23rd, we will be in Pensacola for PensaCon, so Denise and I hope to see all of the friends we’ve been missing so much for the past 8 years (you all know who you are). If you’re in the Gulf Coast/Florida Panhandle area, this is a really fun show to check out with a lot of amazing guests, so I encourage you to join us there. You have no idea how happy I will be to get away from the gloom and snow.

I should mention, our co-producer on the Heavy Metal Revisited documentary we’re doing, Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot, was nominated for an Oscar this year for his documentary about Holocaust survivor and the world’s oldest pianist Alice Herz Sommer in “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.” Keep your fingers crossed that his film wins – we’re very proud of his hard work.

If you’re lucky enough to attend Angouleme this year, you may run into Magnetic Press’ publisher Mike Kennedy, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am very excited about this, and will have more to share soon.

In other random brain droppings, Denise & I started watching the French horror drama, The Returned, and it’s really addictive. I think we binge watched 5 episodes in one night. Our other new TV addictions are HBO’s True Detective, and NBC thriller Black List with James Spader is a lot of fun. Of course, we’re glad to see Sherlock back on air, and are looking forward to Walking Dead soon as well.

What are you all watching lately? Got any good leads for us? We’d love to hear what you like out there, too.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dear Friends,

Here’s a poster explaining what I’ll be doing tonight – teaching drawing skills to children and pre-teens. If you would like to get some holiday shopping out the way, I will have a table set up for art sales and autographs after the teaching event.

Dear Friends,

I had a GREAT time at the DISCOVERY MUSEUM in Milwaukee with my 501st friends last weekend teaching people how I do what I do. (And yes, I AM available to give this lecture, teach demos, and do Q&As for your large group or students – for inquiries please contact my wife/publicist denise@writebrainmedia.com). Here’s an image from my lecture:

Tomorrow through Sunday: I will be at Detroit Fanfare, and I will be a presenter for the Shel Dorf Awards, so hopefully I’ll catch up with many of you at either event. Here’s a link for more information:  http://detroitfanfare.com/

Saturday November 2nd:  I will be teaching an art demo at BLICK ART SUPPLY in Wheaton, IL. This makes up for the one I had to miss earlier this fall.

This day also marks the grand opening of my friend J. Anthony Kosar’s MALEFICIUM DARK ART Exhibiton: http://www.kosartgallery.com/2013-maleficium-dark-art-exhibition.html – the grand opening is 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. on the 2nd, but the exhibit is available to tour by appointment only from 11/2 – 11/30.  You may recognize Anthony as he was a winner on last season’s SYFY show, FACE OFF. His f/x makeup is incredible, and if you are interested in learning from him, he teaches classes! Check him out1

Saturday November 3rd: Happy Diwali to my many Indian friends, and we celebrate my son’s 9th Birthday!

For a few weeks in November and possibly into December, things will be a little nutty here as I’m having a new studio built over the garage, so if I delay in getting back to you on something urgent, ping my wife/publicist at denise@writebrainmedia.com or call her at (630) 845-4694.

Dear Friends,

The summer is flying by fast and it was great to see all my fans come out to San Diego for #SDCC this year. One of the things I had for the show was my 2013 sketchbook LEADWORKS for sale. (I have changed the title this year to reflect a more dynamic name than “Dave Dorman Sketchbook”!) Like previous years, it features pencil roughs and finished preliminaries for various works I have painted from Star Wars to WoW and everything in-between (including President Obama!).
Here’s a peek at the cover:

I had LEADWORKS delivered directly to my hotel in San Diego from the printer, so I was unable to list it here for purchase until now.
You can buy LEADWORKS now via this link: http://www.davedorman.com/leadworks2013.shtml.
The price is $15.00 including postage ($20.00 for outside the USA). Of course, each copy will be signed at no extra charge.
For the first time, I am also offering a print of my critically acclaimed and much admired painting “Dorothy Daydreams.”

This piece of art was produced for the “Visions of Oz” art show in Los Angeles, sponsored by Creature Features and Taylor White.  The art is my interpretation of Dorothy alone on the plains of Kansas, dreaming of a more exciting life just over the horizon. The print is 13″ x 19″, printed on heavy archival stock, directly from my studio one at a time. The price is $30.00 including postage ($40.00 for outside the USA).
To order your very own Dorothy Daydreams print, please follow this link:

I will be at Wizard World Chicago this weekend Aug. 9-11. You will find me at Booth #313 where I will be promoting my friend Brian Wyrick’s new comic “The Henchmen.” I was honored to be asked to paint the cover for the first issue, which will debut at the convention, so please stop by and pick up a copy and a couple of creator autographs including mine!
Since it’s Shark Week, I should mention that my good friend, writer Andrew E.C. Gaska (for whom I did art in his “Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes” critically acclaimed book) has asked me to create art for his really fun new story, FRENZY, now on Kickstarter – a horror story about a shark bloodbath in the ocean – the $4k backer gets my original painting for free – we’re 22 days away from reaching our $30k goal, so if you want to help Kickstart a cool oceanic horror story, here’s the link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1867085351/frenzy-an-illustrated-novel

Stay tuned–there will be big news concerning my WASTED LANDS project in the next blog. To get breaking news on WASTED LANDS, please “Like” my Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands. Also, I have a new Fan Page for non-WASTED LANDS news – that is https://www.facebook.com/davedormansstudio, so please “Like” that page if you haven’t already. Dedicated Star Wars Fan Gets Dave Dorman Art Tattooed On Entire Back

Posted in 501st, Facebook, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Nerd Culture, Pop Culture, Star Wars with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 30, 2013 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

Much to my surprise, posted on the Facebook 501st Legion Fan Page was a fan and tattoo artist (who was doing tattoos at Celebration in Germany) named Tomi Demolka, who permanently committed my art to his back – in particular, my Star Wars art piece, Lord Vader’s Persuasion of the Outer Rim. I’m sharing his images here – the Tattoo Artist is Sławek Fronczek from Tattoo.pl (Poznan, Poland), and I think he did a terrific job of capturing the art:

Dear Friends of the Page,

I typically post a temporary page if I’m having a sale on my prints for a special occasion, but I’ve been thinking it would be wise to have a full-time online store, so here is the link to my new online store:

http://davedorman.bigcartel.com

Please feel free to share the link with your social networks. It would be an enormous favor to me.

Additionally, I have some fun new interviews posted on our podcast, http://itscomicbookday.com, and as always, I invite and encourage you to join me on my Facebook Fan Page, http://Facebook.com/DaveDormanFanPage and on Linked In where I’m an open networker at http://linkedin.com/in/thedavedorman.

As always, I thank you for your support and interest in my work. I’m hard at work on getting my new online school launched, and I will be posting news here as I’m able to start accepting students. If you are interested in being on the early invite list, please email denise@writebrainmedia.com.

I should also mention, I’m in a Star Wars documentary called “The Force Within Us”  by my friend Cris Macht. I will be attending the premiere at the Arcada Theater in  St. Charles, IL on Friday, March 22nd, so if you are in Northern Illinois, I welcome you to join us there.

Have a good one, everybody,

Dave

I Need Your Opinion – Dave Dorman Experience 2013?

Posted in Blogger, Blogging, Chicago Comic Book Artists, Collectibles, Collections, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Comic Book Convention, Comic Book Cover Art, Comic Books, Dave Dorman Experience 2013, DAVE DORMAN NEWS, Denise Dorman, Entertainment, Facebook, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Illustration, Nerd Culture, Painting, Pop Culture, The Dave Dorman Experience, WriteBrain Media with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 1, 2013 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I’ve gotten more than a few Facebook messages on this matter, and I’d like to check in with you who follow my blog. I’m considering doing another “Dave Dorman Experience” this year during C2E2, but I want to make sure there’s still interest. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this tiny event, here’s what it entails:

  • A limousine picks you up at a designated location at C2E2 and drives you to my house.
  • A private chef prepares a gourmet dinner, served to you, my guests.
  • I give a brief studio tour and my various collections & paintings.
  • I create a fresh piece of art for my guests, starting with the preliminary and going through to the final painting. (Last year I did a Boba Fett piece.)
  • We draw straws to see who goes home with either one.
  • I offer access to my private vault of prints, prelims and available paintings for sale. (This is great for collectors.)
  • This year, I hope to have customized shirts for everyone as a keepsake.
  • The limousine returns you to your hotel in Chicago.

Let me know if this is something you’d like to see me do again this year. We had a lot of fun with the fans who joined us last year! Please email my wife & publicist at denise@writebrainmedia.com if you’d like additional information.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Dave
