Dear Friends,

A special thanks to all of you who came to our art lecture at HEVANSTON GALLERY in Evanston this last Tuesday night. Douglas Klauba, Aaron B. Miller, Charlie Athanas, Steve Bialer and I were very happy with the turnout, and I hope to post video here soon, since Charlie Athanas taped the event.

Tomorrow through Sunday I will be at Chicago’s C2E2 Convention at McCormick Place with plenty of affordable prints and original art for sale, so be sure to join us if you can. I will be in Artists Alley at Table F1. Around noon tomorrow, I have a signing to do for publisher Michael Phifer, but I will be around other than that. Joining me tomorrow will be Mike Bawden and Tim Bawden of Silent Gunfight, creators of THE WASTED LANDS Board Game IRON WARS. If you love big, giant trains, strategy and card play, this is the game for YOU.

I am honored and humbled that Oscar and Emmy Award winning makeup & visual effects artist Doug Drexler wrote a beautiful Foreword for my new WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS book, published by Magnetic Press. Here’s the Wikipedia detail on Doug, to bring you up to speed if you are unfamiliar with his enormous body of work:

Doug Drexler (born in New York City) is a visual effects artist, designer, sculptor, illustrator, and a makeup artist who has collaborated with such talents as Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Meryl Streep, and Warren Beatty. He began his career in the entertainment industry working for makeup legend Dick Smith on such films as THE HUNGER and STARMAN. He has also contributed to Three Men and a Little LadyThe Cotton ClubFXManhunter and DICK TRACY. Dick Tracy earned Drexler an Oscar, as well as The British Academy Award and the Saturn Award for his special makeup effects on characters such as Big Boy Caprice (played by Pacino) and Mumbles (played by Hoffman). Two Emmy nominations in the same field followed for three years working on Star Trek: The Next Generation, where he performed such tasks as aging Captain Picard for “The Inner Light”. His final make-up job for the series, and perhaps his career, was the Mark Twain makeup worn by Jerry Hardin in the two part episode “Times Arrow.”

In 1992 Drexler made a career change by moving over to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as designer, digital artist and effects artist. He continued in that capacity on the subsequent Star Trek films as well as Star Trek: Voyager. In April 2001 Drexler worked as senior Illustrator and CGI designer on the fifth Star Trek series, Enterprise. Following Enterprise, Doug was hired by renowned Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel as CG Supervisor on Battlestar Galactica, “Caprica”, “Blood and Chrome,” and “Defiance.” Doug won two Emmy Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for Galactica.

What I admire most about Doug, aside from his amazing legacy, is that he always challenges himself to grow in his art and in his career.

As always, thanks for reading. Hope to see you soon.

Dave.

Dear Friends,

As always, it’s great fun exhibiting at San Diego Comic-Con and seeing old friends and new friends. It’s also a great honor to be working with game designers Mike Bawden and Tim Bawden of Silent Gunfight, who are premiering the prototype to IRON WARS, a WASTED LANDS game at our Booth #4500, alongside Mike Kennedy and Elizabeth Kennedy of SequentialInk.com, who are publishing my RAIL: BROKEN THINGS – A Tale of the Wasted Lands graphic novel online for FREE here, so check it out! Here are some images of our new IRON WARS game for those of you who cannot be here to see it in person. It’s a strategy board game and a trading card – best described as Risk-meets-Magic The Gathering, but not as fantasy-oriented. Let me know what you all think. I’m interested in your feedback and I thank you in advance for checking it out! And if you have time, please “Like” my Facebook fan page for THE WASTED LANDS. DAVE DORMAN’S WASTED LANDS FRANCHISE SHOOTS ITS WAY INTO THE GAMING WORLD AT THIS YEAR’S SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON
Summary: Dorman and Silent Gunfight Entertainment to preview “Wasted Lands: IRON WARS” – a new board and trading card game based on Dave Dorman’s “Wasted Lands” franchise at SDCC Booth #4500

CHICAGO, IL — July 1, 2013 — Fans of Dave Dorman’s train-centric “Wasted Lands” stories no longer have to shoot first and ask questions later when it comes to the next installment in the creator-owned franchise. Dorman, a legendary comic book artist, and gaming/entertainment company Silent Gunfight Entertainment will be introducing “Wasted Lands: IRON WARS” at San Diego Comic-Con, July 17 – 21, 2013. Fans will have an opportunity to study a mock-up of the game and its components; meet Dave Dorman, the creator of “Wasted Lands”; and discuss how the game is played with the game’s architect, Tim Bawden of Silent Gunfight.

Previews and meet-and-greets will take place at Dorman’s end cap Booth #4401/4500, facing toward the lobby, first row in, located near Door “F” of the San Diego Convention Center.

“We’ve really tried to create something unique in the game-playing area,” explained Bawden. “This game can work both as a strategy-driven board game and as a competitive trading card game. And by publishing new card sets in the future and adding an augmented reality aspect to the board game, we’ve created a game system that has the potential to give players a different experience every time they play.”

Dorman will be providing all of the art for the trading cards, game pieces, game board and packaging.  It’s a tall order, but worth all the effort – according to Dorman: “The game builds out an important part of the Wasted Lands story.  The time period we refer to as The Iron Wars is the era that set the dystopian stage on which all of our stories take place.  Players will become familiar with the Rail Barons and their ruthless struggles for domination over their rivals.”

It’s all part of a broader marketing strategy designed to whet the appetite of fans who have been clamoring for more Wasted Lands stories since Dorman first introduced his world to readers on the pages of Heavy Metal Magazine in the 1990s.

“When we started developing the game for Dave, we started asking more and more questions about things that were just alluded to in the various graphic novels, short stories and novelizations that had been produced over the last 20 years,” explained Mike Bawden, a partner in Silent Gunfight.  “Dave has so many great ideas and stories about the Wasted Lands tucked away in notebooks, sketchbooks and other spots in his studio, that it was like discovering a world’s history after only having seen the surface for so long.  This has been a fascinating process and, I’m sure, is bound to lead to more Wasted Lands stories and merchandise down the road.”

“I’ve always known my WASTED LANDS story was epic enough to be a natural for gaming, and I am glad it was Silent Gunfight who took it to the next level and created THE IRON WARS. The game is smartly designed by people who understand what works in gaming. It’s a lot of fun to play, not to mention, it has a lot of really fun art!” said Dorman, a board game and online gaming enthusiast.

Silent Gunfight and Dave Dorman will be sharing Booth #4500 to premiere IRON WARS. They will also premiere new art and storylines in the new book, THE WASTED LANDS CHRONICLES, which will inform fans of Dorman’s future plans for his series, which already includes a graphic novel, prose novels, an online serial, an online store and more.
