Dear Friends,

I will be doing a children’s learn-to-draw teaching demo event with Barnes & Noble in West Dundee, Illinois (Spring Hill Mall) on Friday, November 22nd from 5 – 7 p.m.  This is a chance for children ages 5 – 12 to learn “How to Draw Star Wars Art.” I will be presenting this demo and coaching attendees on their drawing skills.  If you live in the Chicagoland area and are looking for a really engaged bookstore offering family-friendly events, check out this particular Barnes & Noble.

In other news, I am continuing my pre-holiday sale on my convention Giclee’ prints – just $25, since I won’t be doing any more conventions until 2014, so buy them here: http://www.davedorman.com/dormanartprints.shtml

Here’s the art demo piece I did for Blick Art Supplies last weekend – a zombie Stormtrooper (photography by Kim Evans Worley):

If you’re in the Midwest and looking for a family-friendly comic book convention, Indy PopCon in Indianapolis May 30 – June 1st will be the show to attend. This new show is run by my friend Larry Zore, of Comics Price Guide fame. If you’re an artist or vendor interested in being a part of Indy PopCon, please contact denise@writebrainmedia.com. Indianapolis is a really cool city to check out, and they have a wonderful children’s museum there.

Remember to check out the critically acclaimed horror comic “The Other Dead” Issue #2 – it’s getting really fun as the tension builds. Issue #3 will be out soon as well. The Other Dead Issue #1 is sold out and reprints are in transition. The Other Dead Synopsis: Louisiana is Ground Zero for the animal kingdom to become zombified, as a Katrina-like hurricane bears down on Louisiana.

I was pleased to hear that the Joliet Star Wars Day Library Event I’ve been participating in the last three years has grown to become the largest worldwide according to Lucasfilm, so that’s great news for the City of Joliet.

I’m in the throes of clearing out my garage this week and I rediscovered my QVC appearance, so I will be digitizing that to throw online for you to have a good laugh. I also found my WEAR-TV (Pensacola ABC affiliate) appearance on BETA, so I’ll have to find someone to reformat it. I’m still missing my SciFi Channel appearance, so if anyone out there has video of it, I’d like to see it again.

If you have a moment and you haven’t already, please “Like” my Facebook Fan Pages. They are as follows:

Have a great Sunday & thanks for reading,

First, a warm thank you to all who came by to see me at Detroit Fanfare last weekend. Also, a belated Happy Halloween to all of you. With my love for horror, it’s one of my favorite holidays of the year, and I can honestly tell you it’s even more fun when you’re a dad. For my many Indian friends, I wish you a Happy Diwali this weekend. We will be celebrating Diwali with our Indian friends at our home on Sunday. This may be the first brunch where I’ve had to forgo bacon, but I’ll take one for the team for friends.

Okay, here’s where I’ll be this weekend, most relevant to those of you who will be in the Chicagoland area this weekend:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd:

WASTED LANDS GAME UPDATE:

I wanted to also share with you an update on my WASTED LANDS game, IRON WARS. We are currently designing the train game pieces for the board, courtesy of my Z Brush friend Dave Taylor of Imagination Rendered in Valparaiso, Florida. In terms of game play, we received great reviews from the game testing we did at GenCon and we believe it’s ready for prime time. Now I am doing the art for the trading cards.

WASTED LANDS STORY UPDATE:

I’m currently creating art for a Wasted Lands story I’m doing for Heavy Metal magazine, as well as art for my Wasted Lands Story Bible. If you’ve never read my WASTED LANDS graphic novel RAIL, please check it out here for FREE: http://www.sequentialink.com/comic/rail-page-01/

Dave Dorman on the State of the Comics Industry and Digital Art

Dear Friends,

I thank all of you who came to see me at C2E2. It’s always good to see familiar faces at the show. It was great to reconnect with many of my friends there and some winners of the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards as well. One key business dinner meeting resulted in some exciting news about my own action-adventure western series The Wasted Lands and I look forward to sharing that news when I can. Suffice it to say there will be plenty of new Wasted Lands material to see at my Booth #4500 at San Diego Comic-Con this year.

I was flattered to read today that some of the Star Wars  fans would like to see me do the next movie poster. Here’s their comments: http://bitly.com/137QU69

I did a 2-part interview at Hypno Comics in Ventura, CA a couple of weeks ago with owner George Chase, and a special thanks to Jeffrey Willerth at SliceofSciFi.com for everything he did to create the piece. In this interview, George & I discuss the state of the comics industry and what I, as a traditional artist, really think about digital art, and the deficits I see in a lot of younger artists — deficits that can be fixed if they’re aware of them. Here’s a link to that interview: http://bitly.com/17DN5qj

My next big show is Spectrum Fantasy Art Live in Kansas City May 17th, 18th and 19th, so I look forward to reconnecting with my artist friends and fans there. I will have some original art pieces there that aren’t typical of what you’ve seen from me in the past. Here is a link to information on that show: http://bitly.com/ZHfkTm

Today I deliver my painting to our close family friends, the Haleys, and their lovely daughter Lauren, who patiently posed for this piece I did for the Visions of Oz Gallery Show in Los Angeles, curated by Taylor White:

I Need Your Opinion – Dave Dorman Experience 2013?

Posted in Blogger, Blogging, Chicago Comic Book Artists, Collectibles, Collections, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Comic Book Convention, Comic Book Cover Art, Comic Books, Dave Dorman Experience 2013, DAVE DORMAN NEWS, Denise Dorman, Entertainment, Facebook, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Illustration, Nerd Culture, Painting, Pop Culture, The Dave Dorman Experience, WriteBrain Media with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 1, 2013 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I’ve gotten more than a few Facebook messages on this matter, and I’d like to check in with you who follow my blog. I’m considering doing another “Dave Dorman Experience” this year during C2E2, but I want to make sure there’s still interest. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this tiny event, here’s what it entails:

  • A limousine picks you up at a designated location at C2E2 and drives you to my house.
  • A private chef prepares a gourmet dinner, served to you, my guests.
  • I give a brief studio tour and my various collections & paintings.
  • I create a fresh piece of art for my guests, starting with the preliminary and going through to the final painting. (Last year I did a Boba Fett piece.)
  • We draw straws to see who goes home with either one.
  • I offer access to my private vault of prints, prelims and available paintings for sale. (This is great for collectors.)
  • This year, I hope to have customized shirts for everyone as a keepsake.
  • The limousine returns you to your hotel in Chicago.

Let me know if this is something you’d like to see me do again this year. We had a lot of fun with the fans who joined us last year! Please email my wife & publicist at denise@writebrainmedia.com if you’d like additional information.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Dave Dorman New Comic Book Covers for Gestalt Comics’ STALAG-X

Posted in Author, Blog, Blogger, Blogger Review, Blogging, Chicago Comic Book Artists, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Comic Book Cover Art, Comic Books, Entertainment, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Illustration, Military, Nerd Culture, Painting, Writer with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 30, 2012 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce I’ll be doing the comic book cover art for a new sci-fi graphic novel project for Australia’s largest comic book publisher, Gestalt Comics, in partnership with two writers: NY Times Bestselling Author Kevin J. Anderson and Xena: Warrior Princess co-producer and scriptwriter Steven L. Sears. I’ve done a lot of cover art over the years for books Kevin has written, including the Young Jedi Knight series and his book Dogged Persistence. Steven and I are both former Floridians and military brats.

Here is how Kevin J. Anderson describes the STALAG-X story:

“STALAG-X is the gritty story of human soldiers trying to survive in an alien concentration camp, and one mysterious prisoner who calls himself “Joe Human.” He cannot allow the vicious aliens to win . . . but because of his own dark past, he doesn’t dare allow himself to be rescued either.”

The release date hasn’t been announced yet, but we are looking at late Fall 2012 for the first issue. I will keep you posted here, and for the writing side, follow http://kjablog.com for Kevin J. Anderson’s posts.

As always, thanks for reading!

Dave Dorman’s New Star Wars Celebration VI Art: ATST’s and EWOKS! Your Questions Answered!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 4, 2012 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

After StarWars.com posted my new art for the Star Wars Celebration VI Limited Edition fine art print, “Breaking Ground: Imperial Base, Moon of Endor,” many of you had praise and an equal number of you had questions for me, so this blog is addressing your questions about the art. I did this piece to incorporate the elements that I enjoy – the ATST’s, the Ewoks, the Biker Scouts, who are the hot rodders of the Imperial Guard – in a scene that has never been, but nonetheless plays out in my own theater of the mind. Note: Please be sure to check out my other artist friends producing prints who are also listed the Celebration VI Gallery at StarWars.com.

Star Wars Celebration VI Art by Dave Dorman, Unfinished.

Before moving ahead, I just wanted to clarify that the image I’m showing you here is unfinished. I still have more work to do – a few added elements and tonal changes and color corrections. I will post the actual final version after I return from San Diego Comic-Con.

#1. Why is Darth Vader surrounded by Imperial Guards? First off, this was a compositional decision. I needed to draw your eye’s attention to Vader, and the bold red of the Imperial Guards against the cool earth tones of the rest of the piece ensures that he commands your attention. If he were just sandwiched among Storm Troopers, you wouldn’t readily notice Vader. Secondly, Vader is overseeing the Emperor’s construction of the second Death Star, so the Imperial Guards are ensuring and reporting back that nothing is amiss on the Moon of Endor.

#2. What’s with the ATST’s? The Moon of Endor is a forested planet, so naturally, deforesting needed to be part of the construction for the Base Camp. In my mind’s eye, the ATST’s made perfect sense as the laborers in this scenario, due to their strength and adaptability. After all, the “AT” in ATST does stand for “All Terrain,” so I replaced their heavy gun array with claws.

#3. Why the Ewoks? Over the years, I’ve had literally hundreds of fans request that I paint Ewoks, so this piece is my tip of the hat to those fans. Obviously the Ewoks are resisting the intrusion from the Empire, so they are creating chaos and getting arrested in this scene.

#3. What is the cost of the print? Like many of you, I have been hit hard by this horrendous economy, so rather than the typical $100 cost for my previous Celebration limited edition prints, this year I have lowered the cost to $80. I wanted to ensure that you have money to spend on other items at SWCVI as well. I’m a fan, too, and I know I would like it if my dollar stretched further.

#4. How can I pre-order this print? Lucasfilm has changed their contract, so please watch for me to post pre-order information on this blog and my Facebook Fan Page, which is http://facebook.com/DaveDormanFanPage. At this time I’m not prepared to take pre-orders, so please do not email now. However, after I return from San Diego around July 20th, I will make a posting of all of the information needed to preorder this print. As stated previously, the edition is limited to 250 copies, so those who have purchased prints from me before and would like a matching number, I will also be able to take that information when ordering begins.

I will be posting a separate blog about my San Diego Comic-Con news, probably tomorrow, so stay tuned. I apologize for the radio silence, but I’ve been slammed with deadlines. I’ve been posting the work I’m doing on my Facebook Fan Page, so you’re probably aware that I just did a Pathfinder cover for Dynamic Forces and I’m doing the Darth Maul covers for Dark Horse Comics. Probably the biggest surprise is my first-ever limited edition Battlestar Galactica (2004 series) fine art print that we’ll be unveiling at San Diego Comic-Con with ANOVOS. I also have a Kaiju Japanese Monster design to unveil there – my first-ever collaboration with my son Jack for Max Toy Company and Mark Nagata. It’s been a busy but fun and creatively rewarding summer so far!

I have added a lot of public appearances to my schedule, so I will go over those in my next blog as well. For those of you near Northern Illinois, I will be appearing at Comic Book Mania – a small but growing convention at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Illinois this coming Saturday, July 7th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Joining me will be my artist friends Doug Klauba and Cory Carani, among many other talents appearing there.

Dear Friends,

Despite the frustrating start to my C2E2 Saturday (my car died) I finally got to McCormick Place by 2 p.m., and was only on the floor for about 30 minutes before I had to turn around and connect #TheDaveDormanExperience winners with the limo we arranged to transport them to and from my private residence. My apologies to any fans I missed meeting on Saturday.

Here is an image (courtesy of my caterer Julie Feece) of the winners: Valentin Perales of Houston, TX, Mike Bawden of Bettendorf, IA, me, the driver from H & M Limo, Scott Toth of Clinton Township, MI and Christian Bawden, a student at the Cleveland Art Institute. We were missing winner Dennis Rosado from San Francisco who missed his flight, so I will make it up to him at another date convenient to him.

Here’s a photo of the wonderful meal we shared together in my dining room:

Here’s Valentin watching my live painting demo:

At the end of the night, everyone got an Artist’s Proof of their favorite Star Wars litho and the chance to win the pencil preliminary of the Boba Fett painting I did, plus the actual painting, which I did in acrylic to get it done in time. The prelim winner was Valentin Perales of Texas, and the painting winner was Scott Toth of Michigan! Congrats to both!

We had such a good time, we plan to do this again, so if you have any interest, keep an eye on my blog for details. We could easily do another private event during Wizard World in August of this year.

I want to point out to everyone that my longtime friend and colleague, Marvel/DC comic book and videogame artist Dave DeVries, creator of The Monster Engine was featured on national morning news show CBS This Morning today. Here’s the link to see the feature: http://cbsn.ws/JcGIfI. Kudos to them and producer Andy Merlis (he’s @BrooklynARM on Twitter) for not only producing such a wonderful piece, but for having the bravery to cover “geek” material we don’t typically see on network news. Kudos also to my wife who worked hard to help line produce this piece. If you’re in New York City any time from May 3 – May 31, be sure to check out Dave DeVries’ one-man gallery The Monster Engine show at Sacred Gallery. Here’s the promo for that:

My own one-man gallery show, Pi ala Mode will run through April 29th at Chicago’s Rotofugi Gallery (Lincoln & Diversey Avenues in Chicago). As always, I thank you for reading, and I hope you’re having a great day.

Dear Friends,

Since StarWars.com has posted the news and I’m no longer under a gag order, I’m pleased to announce that yes, I am doing the Darth Maul covers for the new Dark Horse series Tom Taylor is writing. He’s a great writer, so you’re sure to be entertained, and as you can see, I’m having a total blast painting these covers! This picture was taken at Acme Design this past Saturday by my friend Thomas James Spanos (a 501st Midwest Garrison member who poses a lot for my Star Wars art):
