Rohita Shah Interviews #1 Star Wars Artist Dave Dorman:

RS: Can you share with our readers your connection to Mathnasium Whitefish Bay?

DD: You (owners Kal and Rohita Shah) are like family to us, and our sons have been best friends since kindergarten. In fact, Kal and I coached their football team together, which remains a very happy memory for me. I’d never been to Whitefish Bay until you moved there, and in a perfect world, outside of my home in Florida, I’d be living in Whitefish Bay. I like that it’s a community where you can walk to everything you need, and nearby Milwaukee is a great city with a great art museum.

RS: What will attendees of the Mathnasium Whitefish Bay event on October 2nd, 2016 experience?
DD: I’m going to teach drawing geometric shapes and how they can be easily transformed into your favorite STAR WARS characters. I will be doing two classes–one at 11 a.m. and one at 2 p.m. Additionally, I’ll have my prints for sale–Star Wars, Batman, Alien, you name it– and I’ll sign anything anyone brings for me to autograph. Autographs are always free.
RS: What projects have you done lately or are working on now?
DD: I’m working on STAR WARS comic book covers for Marvel Comics, superhero trading cards for Upper Deck, and a commemorative ALIENS print for the 30th anniversary of the 2nd  ALIENS film. This piece premieres at New York Comic Con on October 6th. I’m also taking in requests and doing a lot of commissioned art for fans worldwide.
RS: What advice would you give young artists?
DD: The main advice I’d give them is to draw as much as they can. The more you draw, the better you get. Draw everything, not just what you like to draw. A good artist should be able to easily draw whatever they’re being asked to draw by an art director or client.
RS: Do you recommend any art schools?
DD: That’s such a personal choice, depending on your particular focus. I’d spend time evaluating each program to find the one best fitting your direction. I had a false start at St. Mary’s College in Maryland, where I majored in art and they had me doing these large, contemporary art gallery pieces, which was not at all my interest. I switched schools my sophomore year and attended the Joe Kubert School in Dover, NJ. That school taught me comic book illustration, which is what I thought I wanted, but then I realized, I was geared more towards telling a whole story with one single illustration, which led me to doing cover art. It was only the Kubert School’s second year in operation, so Joe Kubert advised me to graduate early (he said they’d already taught me everything they could) and he encouraged me to go on my own to learn color illustration. My color work is self taught, but it all boils down to the amount time I spent in front of my drawing board. It took me until I was 25 to sell my first piece, the Heavy Metal magazine cover I did.

Happy Halloween everyone!! No Tricks, Just TREATS today… and thru’ the weekend!

Starting today,  I will be offering for PRE-SALE two very anticipated upcoming Dorman cover Variants. These variants are being offered in 2 forms: A full color painted version and a a black and white pencil version. And now… THE REVEAL!

Vader Down!

Vader Down!

The Dark Knight!

The Dark Knight 3!

I once again have worked with M&M Comics in San Antonio, producing variant covers for two of the most anticipated books of the season... Marvel’s VADER DOWN and DC Comics’ DARK KNIGHT 3.

I am offering these for presale now with the release of DK3 on Nov. 11th and VADER DOWN on Nov. 25.

The main reason I am offering these together at this time is to allow you, my valued fans, the opportunity to make your purchases wisely with the holiday season coming up quickly , and not be surprised by a new book coming up that you might not be able to afford because you bought another book earlier. These are the last set of variants I will be producing thru’ the end of the year, so there will be no other Dorman variants upcoming after these (at least for now)

I am offering the books as individual purchases, sets of each title, or a complete set of the 4 books at a discounted price. The pricing is as follows (includes shipping and tracking):

DARK KNIGHT 3 Color Variant $15.00
DARK KNIGHT 3 Pencil Variant $25.00

VADER DOWN  Color Variant $15.00
VADER DOWN  Pencil Variant $25.00

VADER DOWN Both books $30.00
DARK KNIGHT 3 Both books $30.00

VADER DOWN & DARK KNIGHT 3 Full set of 4 books $60.00

AND… as a special HALLOWEEN TREAT (and extended thru’ my son Jack’s birthday,… the boy needs new shoes) all orders of the full set of 4 books will get a copy of my ARCHIE # 1 Variant AND my SPIDER-GWEN #1 variant for FREE!!! 6 books variants for $60.00!! Now THAT’s a treat if I ever heard one!

All books will be signed by me, of course. They will be bagged and boarded unopened directly from the distributor. Books will be sent out by me the week after they hit the stands; however, if you ordered the set of 4, I will send them out after VADER DOWN is released (the week of Nov.30)

Here’s the order page:

Thanks again for all your support of my work and I hope everyone has a safe HALLOWEEN and continued health and safety through the upcoming holidays!

Dave.

Dear Friends,

My Star Wars Marvel Comics variant cover for M&M Comics came in the mail today, so here’s my first look at it:

If you’re not one of the 5k people already following me on my personal Facebook page, you might enjoy seeing my new “Art Director” as Denise calls her – our newest addition to the family, Jonesy the Cat. Yes, she is a Sphinx/Hairless Cat, to accommodate the allergy sufferers in our household (not me).

Me and my new "Art Director."

Me and my new “Art Director.”

And speaking of science fiction-related stuff, I’ve been chatting with Facebook friends about how excited I am to see Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle,” which is available online now, I believe, for free. It imagines what life would be like if the Nazis had been successful in overtaking the U.S. After I read it, I was unhappy with the book cover because it didn’t really represent what the book was about, so back in the 1980s, I painted this one:

Also, I should mention that Denise and I are mentioned (with some of my art) in the new issue of Imagine F/X magazine for January 2015, if you happen to pick it up. And here is a link to pick up my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS, published by Magnetic Press, if you are interested in dystopian action adventure in another world similar to ours – it’s my creator-owned I.P. and my favorite thing I’ve ever worked on, which is saying a lot!

As always, thanks for reading!

Star Wars Toy Based On My Dark Empire 2 Cover Art and Vehicle Design

Dear Friends,

In my garage cleaning frenzy, I’ve discovered a lot of fun items and toys (many of which I’m going to be selling online, so I will keep you posted), but this particular one fascinated my wife, who had no idea I fully rendered this Star Wars vehicle for Lucasfilm for the Dark Empire 2 cover based on an interior design by Cam Kennedy. A fan at Celebration Europe came up to me and gave me 2 of the actual toys created from my creature design & comic book cover art, so here are some images of them:

My Star Wars comic book cover, the creature I designed, and the toy based on it

The cover I’m holding is actually a European edition that was also discovered during my garage cleaning frenzy – I’m unsure which language this is in.

And here’s a side view of the toy:

If you are the fan from Celebration Europe who gave me these wonderful toys, please speak up so I can give you proper credit publicly – I thank you so much.

Dear Friends,

Today and tomorrow, I’ll be in Booth #251 at Indy PopCon, a show put on in Indianapolis by the creators of ComicsPriceGuide.com, a great publication (sign up for it if you haven’t already). It’s a great show with great guests – including my “The Other Dead” friend Kevin Eastman (creator of #TMNT), Joel Hodgson from one of my favorite shows, #MST3K (not to mention a hilarious stint on Jerry Seinfeld’s online show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”) and a few actors from Game of Thrones, etc. This is the show to hit in the Midwest if you can. (A special thanks to our son Jack’s skateboard teacher Jim, from ArmedStar.com in Gilberts, IL for making the trip down.) My WASTED LANDS art is the souvenir art by OffWorld Designs for the t-shirts for Indy PopCon:

Secondly, I’m very troubled that a member of my military family, Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi sits in chains in a Mexican jail since March 2014 (also suffering from PTSD) for mistakenly making a wrong turn on the road from San Diego to Mexico (which has happened to many people, but because he had 3 rifles in his vehicle, he was taken into custody). To right that wrong, I ask that you join me in signing this petition to encourage the Mexican government to release him: http://www.billoreilly.com/site/rd?satype=13&said=12&url=%2Fpetitions%2Fviewpetition%3FpetitionID%3D-642527092894776988

If you’re on social media, the hashtag for this tragedy is #MarineHeldInMexico – let’s prove to the world that social media can right a wrong!

In other news, remember when I did that controversial President Obama cover for animal zombie series “THE OTHER DEAD” by Joshua Ortega, Digger T Mesch and Kevin Eastman?

POTUS loves Dave Dorman art!

Well, the entire THE OTHER DEAD series is now in hard cover in the comic book stores and in Barnes & Noble, as seen here:

Here’s Where You Will Find Me for the Next Couple of Months:

  • Star Wars Library Day – Joliet, IL – next Saturday June 7th
  • Capital City Con, Austin, TX – July 11, 12 & 13
  • San Diego Comic-Con, San Diego, CA – July 23 – 27 (I am being represented by producer Scott Faye and entertainment attorney Adam J. Sher as well as WriteBrain Media for PR).

In other news, as you can imagine, I was beyond incensed by the V.A. Scandal and my military family members not receiving their hard-earned medical care in a timely fashion, being put on secret lists, and many of them dying unnecessarily as the result. This has been going on for decades, and I hope it is finally now getting the media scrutiny and public attention this story deserves. Each of these military veterans should have vouchers to use ANY doctor until this gets corrected. When my father was dying of lung cancer, he received exceptional care from the doctors at Eglin Air Force Base, and I wish that was the case for all of our veterans. His doctor even came to his home to check on him back in 2001. You just don’t see that level of care anymore. Keep these suffering veterans in your prayers and let’s hope there’s a quick resolution and they get the platinum level of care they have more than earned with their sacrifices.

I hope you all have a great weekend and if you can, come & see me at Indy PopCon Booth #215! This is a family-friendly show!
