Dear Friends,

I’m excited to announce that Dima Elissa, CEO of ProofX in Chicago will be presenting the world premiere of the 3D print-out of my WASTED LANDS villainous character THE HOLLOW MAN at MacWorld  tomorrow as part of her presentation at 11:40 a.m. titled “3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping: For Macs and Medicine.” I was very fortunate to work with fellow artist Dave Taylor of Imagination Rendered in Valparaiso, Florida, who did the 3D sculpting of my HOLLOW MAN character, based on my concept art.  I was also fortunate to work with Nuha Nazy at ProofX in getting the logistics managed and the 3D printed piece produced in time for MacWorld – it was a bit of a whirlwind this past weekend on top of my appearance at REEL ART in Berwyn. (A special thanks to Corey, Robert Garcia and the team who put that event together.) Anyhow, I hope my WASTED LANDS creature is well received and if you’re in the MacWorld audience, tomorrow, send me photos or footage of the presentation since they’re not streaming it for the general public. If you haven’t already, please “Like” my WASTED LANDS Fan Page: http://facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands. Here’s the concept art for my HOLLOW MAN character:

Dima Elissa will be hosting an Open House at her ProofX location on April 8th at 1001 University Place in Evanston, IL from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and I hope those of you in Chicagoland can join us there. (Just don’t look for me there at 7 a.m.!)

Additionally, I will be participating in a 3-man art show on April 4th at Hevanston Art Gallery, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL curated by my longtime friend and collaborator Charlie Athanas. Joining me will be my good friends and artist colleagues, Douglas Klauba (you’ve seen Doug’s “Stella 7″ art on Howard Wolowitz’s bedroom wall  if you’ve ever watched “Big Bang Theory”) and Aaron B. Miller

This week I’m working hard on meeting my deadline for Mike Kennedy, publisher of Magnetic Press, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con, so be sure to watch for that – I’ve recolored all of the art from my first graphic novel, RAIL: BROKEN THINGS, as well as the SKINNERS story that first appeared in PENTHOUSE COMICS. I am also creating new art for the book.

Here’s Where You Can Find Me in 2014:

April 10, 11, 12, 13, 14: I’ll be a judge again this year in the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards in Hollywood in mid-April, so if you need to meet with me while out there, contact denise@writebrainmedia.com and she will work hard to get you on my calendar. If you want to see me look ridiculous in a tuxedo, watch the awards ceremony streaming live that Sunday the 13th.

April 25, 26, 27 -  I will be exhibiting in Artists Alley at C2E2 in Chicago at McCormick Place

May 9, 10. 11 - Find me at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live in Kansas City, KS.

May 30, 31, and June 1: I will be exhibiting at Indy PopCon in Indianapolis, IN – this show is curated by Larry Zore of Comics Price Guide and it is a family-friendly show.

June 7: I will be signing at Joliet Star Wars Day at the Joliet Public Library – this is the World’s Largest Star Wars Library Event, so come on out.

July 24, 25, 26, 27 - I will be exhibiting at Booth #4500 at San Diego Comic-Con. Joining me will be Mike and Tim Bawden of SILENT GUNFIGHT with their WASTED LANDS Board Game, IRON WARS, plus a new WASTED LANDS card game called RED TIDE, and Steve Smith of ALAXIS PRESS, publisher of THE LEANING GIRL - the first book from THE OBSCURE CITIES series, published in English for the first time, who will join me with SDCC featured guests writer Benoit Peeters and artist Francois Schuiten.

August 14, 15, 16, 17th - I will be attending GenCon in Indianapolis – I’m not sure yet if we’re exhibiting there with SILENT GUNFIGHT.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

Dear Friends,
I am doing a follow-up to my GI Joe art book AMERICAN HERO. I had a lot of positive reaction and plenty of fans asking if I was going to do another volume. I have a lot more art from my years working with Hasbro designing the GI Joe toys, and with the demand, I have decided to produce another book.
For those who missed the first volume, this book features artwork I produced for Hasbro’s GI Joe toy figure line. The art featured the characters painted as if they existed in real life. The art was for presentation only, in-house at Hasbro and not intended for reproduction. For most of this art, this is the first time it’s been seen by the public outside the Hasbro offices.
American Hero: Book 2

American Hero: Book 2

The specs of the book will be the same as the first volume of American Hero:
  • Size: 6″ x 9″
  • Pages: 24
  • Card stock covers
  • High-quality interior paper
  • Limited Edition: 300 copies
  • Each will be hand signed by me, Dave Dorman
  • Price is $20.00 (plus $5 shipping worldwide)
You can order the book directly from me by going to this page on my website: http://www.davedorman.com/americanhero2.shtml
P.S. I still have some copies of AMERICAN HERO Book 1 if you missed it. They can be ordered on the same web page.

Cyber Monday Special: Dave Dorman Art Poker Cards! And #SWTOR News!

Cards and Games!! These are my topics for a Happy Cyber Monday, Everybody!
I am throwing this quick blog together since you’re on the computer anyway ordering your Holiday gifts. I have two pieces of news to mention this time around:
Many of you know that I play the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic (aka SWTOR) nightly. It’s a wonderful adventure/fighting game with a great feel for the Star Wars universe. You can be a Sith Warrior, a Republic Commando, and even a Jedi! I really enjoy my hours spent in the world of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away!” (And a quick shout-out to my guildmates in PURGE on the “Bastion” server!)
So here’s what happened: SWTOR has a robust array of costuming and armor supplies for your character. I opened the game a few weeks ago and noticed new armors added to the game. And there was one set that looked very familiar. It was Ulic Qel-Droma from “Tales of the Jedi,” which was a character I designed for Dark Horse and painted on quite a few TOTJ Comic and graphic novel covers. Below you will see one of my paintings (TOTJ #1) with Ulic Qel-Droma, and dropped in, you will see the character screen shots from the game. Nice job and a huge honor, SWTOR designers!! (And SWTOR design team, if you ever need more costume, creature, or character designs I’m just an email away!)

My second piece of news is also game-related!  DRIVE THRU CARDS is now offering exclusive Dave Dorman art standard Poker deck cards! Talk about the perfect stocking stuffers! The first set is available now for just $7.99 per deck (plus postage), featuring my cover art from the Wastedlands RAIL Graphic Novel!

You can order directly from Drive Thru Cards here.  I will be adding new card decks with my artwork in the next few weeks, so keep watching here for me to post the news. I have the proof set in my hands, and the quality is superb.
Make sure to soak your fingers in Palmolive after all your Cybershopping activity today! Thanks all, be well!

My Newest Addition for the Library: The Art of Craig Elliott

Posted in Collectibles, Collections, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Nerd Culture, Pop Culture with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 1, 2012 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

Like many of you, for me, Wednesday is Comic Book Day. I was very excited to find my friend Craig’s new book today at Dreamland Comics in Schaumburg.

The Art of Craig Elliott, The Newest Edition to My Art Book Collection

Craig is a longtime friend and a gifted artist. I would characterize his style as organic, ethereal and imaginative. His glass jewelry is also beautiful. Many of you will recognize his name from the high-profile visual development work and animation art he’s done for DreamWorks, Pixar and Disney, on films like Enchanted, The Princess and the Frog, Shark Tale, Bee Movie, Mulan, Hercules, etc. To say he’s talented is an understatement. If you’re unfamiliar with his work, I recommend you check out his portfolio at http://craigelliottgallery.com or his IMDB Listing.

As always, thanks for reading,

Dave.

Some Dave Dorman Horror Artwork: Too Scary for Busch Gardens!

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 7, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

This story is in my new book ROLLING THUNDER THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN, but I wanted to share this art with you in honor of October, my birthday month and everyone’s favorite month for horror.

A few years back, my business partner Stephen D. Smith, formerly the Editor-in-Chief of the well respected MonsterScene magazine and an authority on haunted and theme park attractions, was asked to come up with a cool haunt idea for Florida’s Busch Gardens. We talked it over and knowing they had an asylum aspect to their haunt, we came up with this really fun character named DEMENTIA. Unfortunately Busch Gardens’ focus groups deemed our character– and her back story of being physically and emotionally destroyed by an uprising in the asylum– way too scary. So without further adieu, I introduce you to our beloved DEMENTIA. If there are any producers out there reading this, we have a wonderful story and we would love to see this in film one day from someone like Ghost House Pictures, whom we know does horror right.

And here she is below, fully rendered. I was so passionate about this piece, I completed it in just 24 hours. There’s nothing I love doing more than creature, character and costume design. The backwards 13 in her forehead is the result of DEMENTIA getting her head smashed into the door of inmate room #13.

In other pop culture news, I picked up American Vampire yesterday at the comic book store in Schaumburg, IL. Denise and I are fighting over who reads it first. Only one of the two stories is actually Stephen King writing, which I think is confusing to many who think they are buying a solely Stephen King graphic novel. Still, it looks to be a lot of fun. Speaking of fun, I saw Resident Evil Afterlife in 3D the other day – have you all seen it? If so, share with me here what you thought of it.

If you get a chance, please check out my passion project, Project 52 – http://www.indiegogo.com/Project-52. I’m working towards my goal of $52,000 to make this happen for USACares.org. If you can give even $5, that guarantees you or the person you designate is mentioned in my new book. I would love to see you in there. My thanks to all who have already generous contributed and gotten us to the $2710 mark in just a few days!

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dave Dorman Doing Live Painting @SDCC

Steampunk Girl Created at Reverie '09 in Dallas, TX

Dear Friends,

When I’m at San Diego Comic-Con, I tend to get anxious because I’m not painting while I’m there. Painting is an addiction for me, and fortunately, I’m able to make a living doing it. So this year, I’ve decided I’m going to paint. I will do a live painting over the course of the 5 days that I’m there. Please let me know what you’d like to see me paint, and whatever the majority of people request will influence my final decision on what I’ll be painting. (Of course, if someone wants a commissioned piece, that will take priority, and I will be happy to work in my favorite size — 24 x 36– and ship it directly to the new owner at show’s end.) So, let me know if you want a hot Heavy Metal-style babe, G.I. Joe, Batman, Alien, Captain America, Buckaroo Banzai, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or something from my Wasted Land series, or even a brand new concept art design.

For those not attending SDCC, Denise will be there to photograph the piece in phases and will post it here on my blog for you. The painting up above is what I created live during Reverie ’09 in Dallas, which was put on by Massive Black and ConceptArt.org

Dave Dorman Raising Funds for the Gulf Coast BP Oil Victims

I will know shortly if my friend Bill Paetzold can supply the giclees I want to sell to help raise money for the BP Oil victims along the Gulf Coast. I will post a link here once I can make it happen. I will send all money beyond printing and shipping costs to the financially challenged folks on the Gulf. As you  know, the Fort Walton Beach/Shalimar area in Okaloosa County, Florida was my home for more than 25 years, so I’m watching the situation with a heavy heart. Here’s an image of Navarre Beach, which was near my home, as of today: http://www.nwfdailynews.com. My longtime friend and the author I hired to write all of my Wasted Lands series, as well as our Bram Stoker Award-winning zombie book Dead Heat (Mojo Press), Del Stone Jr., is the Associate Editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News, and he handles the paper’s popular online edition.

Where in the World is Dave Dorman? My Summer Schedule:

Sometime in July - I’ll be on Dennis Miller’s radio show, raising awareness that my new book, Rolling Thunder: The Art of Dave Dorman (IDW Publishing/Desperado Publishing) raises funds for USACares.org, an organization that helps financially challenged military families. (As a former military brat, I can tell you unless someone is a trust fund baby, they’re ALL financially challenged). I am donating 10% of my earnings from this book directly to USACares.org.

July 10, 2010 - Signing all day at Gail Borden Public Library for Elgin, IL Comic-Con. Click here for details on the event. (A special thanks to Darlene Nauman for letting me know this local show was happening.)

July 22- 25, 2010 - I’m a “special guest” this year at San Diego Comic-Con. Look for me at my “Rolling Thunder” booth – that’s how we’re listed in the show guide.

August 12 -15, 2010 - Star Wars Celebration 5 in Orlando, FL.

You can always find me on my pop culture, comics & art podcast, “It’s Comic Book Day”, free on iTunes, and on Twitter, I’m @DaveDorman. Please follow me there, too, for breaking news.

As always, thanks for reading. I hope to see you all this summer.

Dave.
