Hi Everybody,

Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!

For those of you in the U.S. who are following me, I hope you’re having a Happy Independence Day! We are celebrating with friends tonight and looking forward to taking a few hours off (yes, we solopreneurs are both working today). I will always believe the United States is exceptional and the greatest nation on this planet, despite many citizens and politicians’ very best attempts to collapse our system from within. I am hoping that those who reproduce and vote every four years are awakened, paying very close attention, and will vote in future politicians who genuinely value our U.S. Constitution, our freedom, and our liberty. I also encourage you to do whatever you can to help our Wounded Warriors and our military families, who suffer from the uninformed, unwitting whims of a highly military unfriendly government. What has gone down in the Veterans’ Administration over the past several decades is unforgivable and that guilt is on both sides of the political aisle. I mourn for every single military family who has lost a loved one due to the greed and stupidity of those in charge at the V.A.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, here is a link to my interview on Chicago’s WTTW last week regarding the new Lucasfilm Museum of Narrative Arts that Chicago was awarded by George Lucashttp://chicagotonight.wttw.com/tags/dave-dorman (just click on the photo of my art).

We are looking forward to the new museum and I personally am eager to see George’s massive collection of my favorite illustrators from the 20th Century. Somehow, people think Norman Rockwell is the only one George collects. I guess they are just unaware that there are other illustration giants out there.

HEAVY METAL REVISITED Documentary News

In other news, our HEAVY METAL REVISITED documentary with Evan Beloff and Frederic Bohbot of Bunbury Films is in production, and I hope to grab some footage in Austin, TX next week of Harry Knowles and Bernie Wrightson (and if we get very lucky, Robert Rodriguez). Here’s a an older video trailer to give you a feel for what we’ve been working on over the past several years. http://vimeo.com/11669127

Last Friday Mark Voss and our production team did a really fun interview with Sammy Hagar, who co-wrote the theme song HEAVY METAL with Jim Peterik, and Sammy had some surprising things to say.

As I mentioned, next week I will be in Austin, TX for Capital City Con, so I look forward to seeing my Texas friends there. I will have plenty of art for everyone to buy, but I tend to sell out quickly, so please be sure to hit me up on Day 1.

In the next few months you’ll see some changes to my website as I transfer over to a new fan management system with StageBloc.com – they have a terrific all-in-one solution of eCommerce, blogging, social media outreach and fan club management that will better serve you, my fans, and help me make more informed decisions on which products you want to see more of, and where you’d like me to appear for shows.

Dave Dorman News: Announcing the WASTED LANDS Omnibus by Magnetic Press

Dear Friends,

First off, I need to be sure to mention that I, artists Douglas Klauba and Aaron B. Miller will all be speaking at HEVANSTON GALLERY in Evanston, IL at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd, EARTH DAY. Since we artists all work from home and save so much of the rest of the world’s carbon footprint, I think you should join us in celebrating that on Earth Day. Charlie Athanas, the gallery’s curator, will be hosting our lecture. That address is HEVANSTON GALLERY, 529 Davis Street, Evanston, IL 60201.

Now I want to share with you info on my creator-owned series, THE WASTED LANDS, which is now a new book, the WASTED LANDS Omnibus, published by Magnetic Press and publisher Mike Kennedy. It’s a huge honor to share this with all of you, and I think Mike Kennedy has done an amazing job. If you’ve noticed me rather silent lately on social media, it’s because I’ve been working so hard to meet this deadline–I’m still working hard on it–to get every comic book page recolored and relettered. I hope you all enjoy the end result:

Seeking Fan Suggestions for My Pencil Sketchbook

Dear Friends,

I am considering doing a bunch of character studies–fully rendered pencil drawings–like this one:

BSG's Captain Adama by Dave Dorman #SoSayWeAll

BSG’s Captain Adama by Dave Dorman #SoSayWeAll

for inclusion in my summer sketchbook LEADWORKS. While I have my own favorite characters to draw, I thought I would throw it out to you, my fans, to get some ideas on what you would like to see me draw. If you have suggestions for any character from any media (films, comics, TV, media, etc.) just list them on either of my Facebook Fan Pages in the relevant thread here: http://facebook.com/davedormansstudio

or here: http://facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands

and I will take them under consideration. If I use YOUR suggested character, I will be sure to credit your name with a special thanks on the related page in the new LEADWORKS 2014 book.

Thanks for reading and Happy Hump Day,

Dave

Some Interviews I Did This Past Week – Video & Print

Dear Friends,

I’ve decided to get better about posting my interviews since many of you probably don’t see them unless I mention them, so this past week, I did two – one with Shawn Hopman of Nerdgasm.net in print, and one with host Carlos Phoenix of The Lounge Network. Here are those two links for you:

The Nerdgasm Interview:  http://nerdgasms.net/interview-with-illustrator-legend-dave-dorman/

The Lounge Network Video Interview: http://www.theloungenetwork.com/2014/02/02/dave-dorman-stars-wars-dungeons-dragons-lounge-interview/

The weekend of February 21 , 22 and 23rd, we will be in Pensacola for PensaCon, so Denise and I hope to see all of the friends we’ve been missing so much for the past 8 years (you all know who you are). If you’re in the Gulf Coast/Florida Panhandle area, this is a really fun show to check out with a lot of amazing guests, so I encourage you to join us there. You have no idea how happy I will be to get away from the gloom and snow.

I should mention, our co-producer on the Heavy Metal Revisited documentary we’re doing, Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot, was nominated for an Oscar this year for his documentary about Holocaust survivor and the world’s oldest pianist Alice Herz Sommer in “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life.” Keep your fingers crossed that his film wins – we’re very proud of his hard work.

If you’re lucky enough to attend Angouleme this year, you may run into Magnetic Press’ publisher Mike Kennedy, who is publishing my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS for San Diego Comic-Con this year. I am very excited about this, and will have more to share soon.

In other random brain droppings, Denise & I started watching the French horror drama, The Returned, and it’s really addictive. I think we binge watched 5 episodes in one night. Our other new TV addictions are HBO’s True Detective, and NBC thriller Black List with James Spader is a lot of fun. Of course, we’re glad to see Sherlock back on air, and are looking forward to Walking Dead soon as well.

What are you all watching lately? Got any good leads for us? We’d love to hear what you like out there, too.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Additionally, I will be appearing at Cyphan this weekend at the Hyatt in Rosemont , IL (next door to the convention center where Wizard World is held). This is a fun, young, fan-run con that I really want to see succeed. Cyphan is in its third year now, and embraces science fiction, horror and fantasy.

On a side note, I send my condolences to the victims and their survivors from the Aurora, Colorado tragedy. I am especially proud of the fan community for pulling together and supporting these people emotionally and financially. I know that writer Steve Niles posted a charity that is helping these people called GivingFirst.org and here is the link: https://givingfirst.org/index.php?section=content&action=dynamic&cmsID=36, and Comics Price Guide is selling t-shirts for $20 to help them as well. Yes, I bought one. I hope you do, too. Here is the link to the t-shirts: http://www.comicspriceguide.com/shirt.aspx

I think Christian Bale and his wife should be commended for comforting the survivors and their families. He’s a terrific actor and he’s proven he’s a stand-up human being.

My writer friend John Ostrander and I were interviewed by a Richmond, VA CBS affiliate TV station Monday regarding a Batman story John wrote long ago. I did the cover art. That interview is here: http://wtvr.com/2012/07/24/holmberg-the-story-behind-batman-and-robins-fight-for-gun-control-in-va/

I did an interview with Comics Price Guide during Comic-Con, and you can see that at http://facebook.com/davedormanfanpage.

Thanks as always for reading and I will be checking back in soon.

Dave.
