The Art This Comic Book Artist Treasures Most

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, I have a budding artist in the house named Jack, age 6, and his greeting cards are something I look forward to every holiday. Sometimes, they’re a little unsettling, such as the Valentine’s Day card…

Our Son's Valentine 2011

that informed me that of the Top 3 things he loved, Star Wars was #1, then came his mom and me.

Star Wars is #1 in Jack's Heart of Hearts.

But this year’s Birthday card was exceptionally special:

Key: Be sure to add your byline, as parents are never sure who the crayon-drawn cards are from

October 1st is the “best day of his life” or as he puts it, “live.”

Jack's Best Day

And I especially loved the self-portrait of Jack and me:

Jack's self-portrait of himself with me (he fancies himself a Hawaiian shirt wearer)

But some of the Dinosaur and Star Wars art he’s been creating lately has been really fun:

And lately, he’s been transfixed by the Allosaurus:

And here is his Darth Maul. I often wonder what his art teacher must think of his creepier images.

Thanks to all for indulging me today. If the house was burning down, after making sure my family was safe, Jack’s is the art I would grab on my way out the door.

Hope you’re having a good one. I’ll be at Star Wars Fan Days in Dallas this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so stop by and see me if you’re there. I will have something cool to show you that I’ve been toying with (pun intended).

On Monday night, join me in Chicago — I’ll be at then “Masque of the Red Death” gala WildClaw Theatre benefit, raising money for the greatest horror theater in Chicago, and my horror artwork will be auctioned off to help the cause: http://wildclawtheatre.com/wc_html/gala_benefit_2011.html

From October 29th – December 2nd, you can see an incredible horror art collection at Maleficium: Dark Art Exhibition at a west suburban Chicago gallery, owned by my friend J. Anthony Kosarhttp://bit.ly/qbnHiO

I will have 3 pieces in that show, and am joined by the likes of my friends and fellow horror artists including Jill Thompson, Tony Akins, Doug Klauba, Ben Templesmith, Bill Reinhold, Brian Busch and many more.

I Need a Quick Favor by Midnight Tonight

Dear Friends,

Two friends of mine, Sean Steinmarc and Paul Feldman, started this cool new company called PSGive.org. They share a true heart for charity – they started out by raising money for diabetes research, and then realized there had to be a way to create greater impact. PSGive.org not only raises money for charities, it incentivizes people to contribute as well as learn about additional charities needing their help.  In no time at all, PSGive.org has risen to the Top 5 on Mashable.com’s big online contest for the best new online business in 2010. At midnight tonight, all voting stops and the winner is decided. PSGive.org has been in first place all along, and I want to ensure they remain there. I will be donating some really fun experiential stuff (maybe private art lessons with me directly?) with them in 2011, so I am personally invested in seeing they do well. Here’s what I humbly ask of all of you tonight:

Simple instructions:
Taking just 5 seconds to vote helps our charities!
1. click http://on.mash.to/f9Hwu1
2. login with Facebook or Twitter (they don’t do anything w/ your info without permission)
3. click ‘vote’

For Twitter, we’ve been going with this – please ReTweet this for me:

@psgive is startup helping charities; I know u luv charities, pls help by voting on @Mashable & RT! http://on.mash.to/f9Hwu1

Thanks, friends. I will let you know tomorrow if we’ve won!

I thank everyone who dressed up to celebrate little Star Wars Girl Katie last Friday – I have been so slammed with my Frazetta painting, I haven’t had a chance to post since them, but I will do so shortly. A warm holiday season to you all.

Dave.

Dave Dorman Doing Live Painting @SDCC

Steampunk Girl Created at Reverie '09 in Dallas, TX

Dear Friends,

When I’m at San Diego Comic-Con, I tend to get anxious because I’m not painting while I’m there. Painting is an addiction for me, and fortunately, I’m able to make a living doing it. So this year, I’ve decided I’m going to paint. I will do a live painting over the course of the 5 days that I’m there. Please let me know what you’d like to see me paint, and whatever the majority of people request will influence my final decision on what I’ll be painting. (Of course, if someone wants a commissioned piece, that will take priority, and I will be happy to work in my favorite size — 24 x 36– and ship it directly to the new owner at show’s end.) So, let me know if you want a hot Heavy Metal-style babe, G.I. Joe, Batman, Alien, Captain America, Buckaroo Banzai, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or something from my Wasted Land series, or even a brand new concept art design.

For those not attending SDCC, Denise will be there to photograph the piece in phases and will post it here on my blog for you. The painting up above is what I created live during Reverie ’09 in Dallas, which was put on by Massive Black and ConceptArt.org

Dave Dorman Raising Funds for the Gulf Coast BP Oil Victims

I will know shortly if my friend Bill Paetzold can supply the giclees I want to sell to help raise money for the BP Oil victims along the Gulf Coast. I will post a link here once I can make it happen. I will send all money beyond printing and shipping costs to the financially challenged folks on the Gulf. As you  know, the Fort Walton Beach/Shalimar area in Okaloosa County, Florida was my home for more than 25 years, so I’m watching the situation with a heavy heart. Here’s an image of Navarre Beach, which was near my home, as of today: http://www.nwfdailynews.com. My longtime friend and the author I hired to write all of my Wasted Lands series, as well as our Bram Stoker Award-winning zombie book Dead Heat (Mojo Press), Del Stone Jr., is the Associate Editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News, and he handles the paper’s popular online edition.

Where in the World is Dave Dorman? My Summer Schedule:

Sometime in July - I’ll be on Dennis Miller’s radio show, raising awareness that my new book, Rolling Thunder: The Art of Dave Dorman (IDW Publishing/Desperado Publishing) raises funds for USACares.org, an organization that helps financially challenged military families. (As a former military brat, I can tell you unless someone is a trust fund baby, they’re ALL financially challenged). I am donating 10% of my earnings from this book directly to USACares.org.

July 10, 2010 - Signing all day at Gail Borden Public Library for Elgin, IL Comic-Con. Click here for details on the event. (A special thanks to Darlene Nauman for letting me know this local show was happening.)

July 22- 25, 2010 - I’m a “special guest” this year at San Diego Comic-Con. Look for me at my “Rolling Thunder” booth – that’s how we’re listed in the show guide.

August 12 -15, 2010 - Star Wars Celebration 5 in Orlando, FL.

You can always find me on my pop culture, comics & art podcast, “It’s Comic Book Day”, free on iTunes, and on Twitter, I’m @DaveDorman. Please follow me there, too, for breaking news.

As always, thanks for reading. I hope to see you all this summer.

Dave.
