Dear Friends,

My Star Wars Marvel Comics variant cover for M&M Comics came in the mail today, so here’s my first look at it:

If you’re not one of the 5k people already following me on my personal Facebook page, you might enjoy seeing my new “Art Director” as Denise calls her – our newest addition to the family, Jonesy the Cat. Yes, she is a Sphinx/Hairless Cat, to accommodate the allergy sufferers in our household (not me).

Me and my new "Art Director."

Me and my new “Art Director.”

And speaking of science fiction-related stuff, I’ve been chatting with Facebook friends about how excited I am to see Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle,” which is available online now, I believe, for free. It imagines what life would be like if the Nazis had been successful in overtaking the U.S. After I read it, I was unhappy with the book cover because it didn’t really represent what the book was about, so back in the 1980s, I painted this one:

Also, I should mention that Denise and I are mentioned (with some of my art) in the new issue of Imagine F/X magazine for January 2015, if you happen to pick it up. And here is a link to pick up my WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS, published by Magnetic Press, if you are interested in dystopian action adventure in another world similar to ours – it’s my creator-owned I.P. and my favorite thing I’ve ever worked on, which is saying a lot!

As always, thanks for reading!

Dear Friends,

Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads out there. For me, being a dad is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done and if you’re waffling about doing it and you’re a responsible human, I highly recommend it. Here’s a recent photo of Jack and me from Pensacon, taken by our photographer friend Fred Turnbow:

A fan at Indy PopCon came up to my booth a couple of weekends ago wearing this tee:

…and he was kind enough to send me one. It’s in Disney stores and the t-shirt maker is a company called Mad Engine. This art is a segment of my Star Wars Celebration V (5) art, from a painting called “A Slight Disturbance in the Force.”  Here is the original for your recollection:

A special thanks to everyone who came out to see me at Star Wars Library Day in Joliet, Illinois – the world’s largest Star Wars Library event, now in its 5th year. It was a lot of fun and gratifying to see my Midwestern Star Wars family.

Next up on my convention schedule is Capital City Con in Austin, TX July 11, 12 and 13. I hope to reconnect with our friends who are like family –the Nick & Michele Iozzo family, and cousins Dan and Sue Bailey in Austin as well as Bernie Wrightson. You can count on my wife to do her level best to “Keep Austin Weird.”

We found some old photos I took in the 1970s of Bernie Wrightson and his contemporaries, including Jeffrey Catherine Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith, Walt Simonson and more. I think you’ll enjoy seeing them as I scan them in and post them here.

Also in July, you will see me at San Diego Comic-Con, Booth #4500 July 23 – 27. I am especially excited this year to launch my new WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS book by Magnetic Press and Mike Kennedy. Click here to pre-order: http://www.magnetic-press.com/wasted-lands-omnibus/

We will have books to sell and sign at our booth as well as the Magnetic Press Booth. I don’t have a Booth # for Magnetic Press yet, but they are located in Publisher’s Row between Taschen and Last Gasp, behind Random House.

Joining me will be my WASTED LANDS rep and producer Scott Faye, and a portion of the booth will be shared by Stephen D. Smith, who did the wonderfully successfully Kickstarter campaign for the very first English translation of the book, The Leaning Girl, and we will have one of my favorite artists, Francois Schuiten and writer Benoit Peeters in our booth.  Here is the cover art for that book:

I am also on Reddit and if any of you want me to do a live Q & A there or a Tweet Chat on Twitter, just let me know and I’ll get it set up.

Also, you may want to check out my wife Denise Dorman’s blog, for a rare peek behind the curtain of life in the Dorman Household: http://comicbookwife.com. She is making me homemade potato salad for Father’s Day, which is a treat for me.

Thanks for reading & have a great day!

My Friend Clydene Nee Needs Your Help

Posted in Author, Collectors, Comic Book Art, Comic Book Artist, Comic Book Convention, Comic Book Cover Art, Comic Books, Del Stone Jr., Entertainment, Fan Culture, Geek, Geek Culture, Nerd Culture, Pop Culture with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 15, 2014 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I call Clydene Nee “The Patron Saint of Artists.” She has helped so many artists over the years–myself included–at Artists Alley in San Diego Comic Con to have a very public presence and launch their careers. A modest but accomplished talent who always preferred to remain behind the scenes, she has never asked for anything in return. Her satisfaction was always derived from selflessly help others. Today I am asking on her behalf. Clydene needs a new kidney and is undergoing dialysis. Unfortunately, the medical powers that be, who admit she MUST have a new kidney to survive, don’t deem it enough of a must to put her high on the donor list. As you can imagine, her medical bills are ratcheting up. Artist Mark Brooks and his wife took the initiative to set up an online fundraiser for Clydene, and the artist community cannot thank them enough. Here is a link so you might help her, too: http://www.gofundme.com/67bolc

In other news, my friend Joel Meadows let me know that Tripwire Magazine now has an iPad app available, so I’ve downloaded it and I think it’s great, so here’s a link to that for you:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/tripwire-magazine-comics%20film/id717140470?mt=8&ls=1

For those of you with iPhones or iPads, my writer friends Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson (of video game Hitman Absolution fame) have a horror fantasy comic called 13 COINS with Simon Bisley’s mind-blowing 3D covers and interior art, so you might want to check that out. It’s available via an app in the iTunes store for just 99 cents. Martin Brennan will be here in Chicago for C2E2, so I’ll be happy to connect him with you if you’re attending the show the end of April. Here’s a link to it:

In other news, I’ll be in Pensacola the end of February for PensaCon. Check out their guest list and you’ll see what this is a great show. I’m excited to go, since I haven’t been back there since we moved to Chicago in 2005, so it will be great to reconnect with longtime friends like author Del Stone Jr. , Mike Suchcicki, attorney Bruce McDonald, blogger Kelly Henry Keathley, author Alessandra Torre, Dave and Denise Daughtry, Tom Roush, Kris Lagerloef, Jason Kennedy, Joy and Ron Todd, the Shalimar Pointe friends and many more.

As always, I thank you for reading. Remember Clydene.

Dave.
