Dear Friends,

Today and tomorrow, I’ll be in Booth #251 at Indy PopCon, a show put on in Indianapolis by the creators of ComicsPriceGuide.com, a great publication (sign up for it if you haven’t already). It’s a great show with great guests – including my “The Other Dead” friend Kevin Eastman (creator of #TMNT), Joel Hodgson from one of my favorite shows, #MST3K (not to mention a hilarious stint on Jerry Seinfeld’s online show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”) and a few actors from Game of Thrones, etc. This is the show to hit in the Midwest if you can. (A special thanks to our son Jack’s skateboard teacher Jim, from ArmedStar.com in Gilberts, IL for making the trip down.) My WASTED LANDS art is the souvenir art by OffWorld Designs for the t-shirts for Indy PopCon:

Secondly, I’m very troubled that a member of my military family, Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi sits in chains in a Mexican jail since March 2014 (also suffering from PTSD) for mistakenly making a wrong turn on the road from San Diego to Mexico (which has happened to many people, but because he had 3 rifles in his vehicle, he was taken into custody). To right that wrong, I ask that you join me in signing this petition to encourage the Mexican government to release him: http://www.billoreilly.com/site/rd?satype=13&said=12&url=%2Fpetitions%2Fviewpetition%3FpetitionID%3D-642527092894776988

If you’re on social media, the hashtag for this tragedy is #MarineHeldInMexico – let’s prove to the world that social media can right a wrong!

In other news, remember when I did that controversial President Obama cover for animal zombie series “THE OTHER DEAD” by Joshua Ortega, Digger T Mesch and Kevin Eastman?

POTUS loves Dave Dorman art!

Well, the entire THE OTHER DEAD series is now in hard cover in the comic book stores and in Barnes & Noble, as seen here:

In other news, as you can imagine, I was beyond incensed by the V.A. Scandal and my military family members not receiving their hard-earned medical care in a timely fashion, being put on secret lists, and many of them dying unnecessarily as the result. This has been going on for decades, and I hope it is finally now getting the media scrutiny and public attention this story deserves. Each of these military veterans should have vouchers to use ANY doctor until this gets corrected. When my father was dying of lung cancer, he received exceptional care from the doctors at Eglin Air Force Base, and I wish that was the case for all of our veterans. His doctor even came to his home to check on him back in 2001. You just don’t see that level of care anymore. Keep these suffering veterans in your prayers and let’s hope there’s a quick resolution and they get the platinum level of care they have more than earned with their sacrifices.

I hope you all have a great weekend and if you can, come & see me at Indy PopCon Booth #215! This is a family-friendly show!

Dave

9/11 Release of President Obama “The Other Dead” #1 Cover Held Up By Customs

Fans and Media Watching Closely As This Story Unfolds

LOS ANGELES, CA–September 8, 2013—The Other Dead (IDW Publishing) comic’s creative team just received word that their book, slated to release on 9/11, is being held up in Customs “to spray for moths.” The timing is conspiracy theory-level suspicious, given the fact that the book’s one-in-10 variant cover by Eisner and Inkpot Award-winning artist Dave Dorman portrays President Obama wielding guns, just as the President is currently considering military action against Syria. “At first I thought Customs said they were spraying for Mothra, which was ironic since the books were being held up in Asia, and this is a sci-fi horror comic about deadly creatures,” quipped Dorman. “But the timing of this delay is suspect.”

Creators Joshua Ortega (Gears of War), Digger T. Mesch (Art Asylum, Mini Mates), Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Heavy Metal) and IDW Publishing are left to wonder when the book will hit retail shelves.  The Other Dead is the first in the zombie genre to tell the tale of a zombie plague hitting the animal world, and the unexpected effect this has on the world.

The Other Dead creative team is continuing to monitor the situation and will update the media as they learn of the retail fate of The Other Dead Issue #1. For breaking news, please “Like” Facebook.com/TheOtherDead.

Early Praise for The Other Dead:

“How has this brilliant premise not been done yet? Just when we’re inundated with ‘zombie this, zombie that,’ Ortega, Digger, and Eastman come along with a rip-roaring adventure that provides the most unique spin on the zombie apocalypse in years.”

–Cliff Bleszinski

Creator, Gears of War

“Gleefully gory and subversive with snark–the only problem with this book is that I didn’t come up with the idea first!”

–Hugh Sterbakov

Emmy-nominated writer of Robot Chicken, Freshmen, and City Under the Moon

“The Other Dead finds space to be itself in a genre where most practitioners stick to the tried and true. Original and genuinely scary.”

-Mike Carey

Eisner Award-winning writer of Unwritten, Lucifer, and X-Men

Dear Friends,

The summer is flying by fast and it was great to see all my fans come out to San Diego for #SDCC this year. One of the things I had for the show was my 2013 sketchbook LEADWORKS for sale. (I have changed the title this year to reflect a more dynamic name than “Dave Dorman Sketchbook”!) Like previous years, it features pencil roughs and finished preliminaries for various works I have painted from Star Wars to WoW and everything in-between (including President Obama!).
Here’s a peek at the cover:

I had LEADWORKS delivered directly to my hotel in San Diego from the printer, so I was unable to list it here for purchase until now.
You can buy LEADWORKS now via this link: http://www.davedorman.com/leadworks2013.shtml.
The price is $15.00 including postage ($20.00 for outside the USA). Of course, each copy will be signed at no extra charge.
For the first time, I am also offering a print of my critically acclaimed and much admired painting “Dorothy Daydreams.”
"Dorothy Daydreams" by Dave Dorman

This piece of art was produced for the “Visions of Oz” art show in Los Angeles, sponsored by Creature Features and Taylor White.  The art is my interpretation of Dorothy alone on the plains of Kansas, dreaming of a more exciting life just over the horizon. The print is 13″ x 19″, printed on heavy archival stock, directly from my studio one at a time. The price is $30.00 including postage ($40.00 for outside the USA).
To order your very own Dorothy Daydreams print, please follow this link:

I will be at Wizard World Chicago this weekend Aug. 9-11. You will find me at Booth #313 where I will be promoting my friend Brian Wyrick’s new comic “The Henchmen.” I was honored to be asked to paint the cover for the first issue, which will debut at the convention, so please stop by and pick up a copy and a couple of creator autographs including mine!
Since it’s Shark Week, I should mention that my good friend, writer Andrew E.C. Gaska (for whom I did art in his “Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes” critically acclaimed book) has asked me to create art for his really fun new story, FRENZY, now on Kickstarter – a horror story about a shark bloodbath in the ocean – the $4k backer gets my original painting for free – we’re 22 days away from reaching our $30k goal, so if you want to help Kickstart a cool oceanic horror story, here’s the link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1867085351/frenzy-an-illustrated-novel

Stay tuned–there will be big news concerning my WASTED LANDS project in the next blog. To get breaking news on WASTED LANDS, please “Like” my Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands. Also, I have a new Fan Page for non-WASTED LANDS news – that is https://www.facebook.com/davedormansstudio, so please “Like” that page if you haven’t already. Happy Fourth of July!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 4, 2013 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Happy Fourth of July to my U.S. Friends, and Happy Saturday to my Worldwide Friends.

I thank all of my military family for their service to our country today. Please be safe and remember that the spirit of independence lives in each and every one of you. As a military brat, I appreciate your service.

As Jack, Denise and I were hanging our U.S. flag in front of our house this morning, we each expressed thanks that we are living in the most free country on earth, no matter how bad things look right now. Our Founding Fathers had a vision that has lasted well over 200 years, and that vision is still valid today. We just need to continue working hard to fulfill that vision. May God bless all of you, and may God continue to bless America.

So…here in the U.S. we have Benghazi-gate, the NSA, the IRS, and journalists being persecuted…but do you want to see something really scary? (Me…taken this morning).

My longtime friend Joel Meadows and his staff just published their big 21st Anniversary Issue of TRIPWIRE–one of the best comics-related magazines on the market, featuring plenty of great artists, interviews, insightful articles, and of course, a painting by yours truly of Captain America v. Darth Vader. It’s out now, so pick it up when you can, and bring it to San Diego for me to sign – I’ll be at Booth #4500, promoting my WASTED LANDS property. (If you haven’t done so already, please “Like” my WASTED LANDS page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/davedormanwastedlands.)

On Saturday, July 13th, I will be exhibiting at Comic Book Mania, held at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL from 10-5 and curated by Bob Cassinelli, so please join all us of there if you can. The Chicago winners of the Writers & Illustrators of the Future Awards will be there with me. For those of you looking for me at the American Library Association event last Saturday in Chicago, my apologies for being unable to attend. My father-in-law was ill, and it was a little touch and go for a while.

A special thanks to all of you who joined me in helping my friend Steve Smith of Alaxis Press Kickstart his Schuiten and Peeters THE LEANING GIRL graphic novel, English edition. He actually went above his $30k goal, so this has been exciting to watch get funded. I know Steve appreciates it very much.

The OTHER DEAD cover I did for IDW Publishing of President Obama has generated some press, so here are some links to that:

A Happy Independence Day to all of you, and remember: if you’re lighting off fireworks & beyond, please be careful.

Dave.

Obama: Too Busy to Give Thanks

Posted in Social Commentary with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 30, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

Memorial Day is the one day out of our year that Congress has given us specifically honoring the people, both military and non, who have given their lives in support and protection of this great country. We are honoring those who have allowed us the freedoms granted by the Constitution and our Founding Fathers. I suppose these freedoms also allow our Commander in Chief to take a “vacation” during Memorial Day Weekend. And lest anyone forget, these are the freedoms that have allowed many to advance beyond their perceived handicaps to achieve a stature that all of us call “The American Dream.”

I hope that you, like me and my family, find it in your hearts to take the time, no matter what your job is, to honor and thank those who have given their lives on behalf of our country. It’s a shame that President Obama, who also enjoys our freedoms, feels he does not need to show his respect and his thanks to those who have fallen in service to our country.

While Obama’s enjoying his picnic in Hyde Park with his progressive friends and jailbird cronies, I may take a trip to Arlington National Cemetary with a full-sized photographic cut-out of our Commander-in-Chief, stand him up amongst the fallen dead and pretend that he actually cares about them and this country.
