A special thanks to all of you who came to our art lecture at HEVANSTON GALLERY in Evanston this last Tuesday night. Douglas Klauba, Aaron B. Miller, Charlie Athanas, Steve Bialer and I were very happy with the turnout, and I hope to post video here soon, since Charlie Athanas taped the event.
Tomorrow through Sunday I will be at Chicago’s C2E2 Convention at McCormick Place with plenty of affordable prints and original art for sale, so be sure to join us if you can. I will be in Artists Alley at Table F1. Around noon tomorrow, I have a signing to do for publisher Michael Phifer, but I will be around other than that. Joining me tomorrow will be Mike Bawden and Tim Bawden of Silent Gunfight, creators of THE WASTED LANDS Board Game IRON WARS. I am honored and humbled that Oscar and Emmy Award winning makeup & visual effects artist Doug Drexler wrote a beautiful Foreword for my new WASTED LANDS OMNIBUS book, published by Magnetic Press. Here’s the Wikipedia detail on Doug, to bring you up to speed if you are unfamiliar with his enormous body of work:
Doug Drexler (born in New York City) is a visual effects artist, designer, sculptor, illustrator, and a makeup artist who has collaborated with such talents as Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Meryl Streep, and Warren Beatty. He began his career in the entertainment industry working for makeup legend Dick Smith on such films as THE HUNGER and STARMAN. He has also contributed to Three Men and a Little Lady, The Cotton Club, FX, Manhunter and DICK TRACY. Dick Tracy earned Drexler an Oscar, as well as The British Academy Award and the Saturn Award for his special makeup effects on characters such as Big Boy Caprice (played by Pacino) and Mumbles (played by Hoffman). Two Emmy nominations in the same field followed for three years working on Star Trek: The Next Generation, where he performed such tasks as aging Captain Picard for “The Inner Light”. His final make-up job for the series, and perhaps his career, was the Mark Twain makeup worn by Jerry Hardin in the two part episode “Times Arrow.”
In 1992 Drexler made a career change by moving over to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as designer, digital artist and effects artist. He continued in that capacity on the subsequent Star Trek films as well as Star Trek: Voyager. In April 2001 Drexler worked as senior Illustrator and CGI designer on the fifth Star Trek series, Enterprise. Following Enterprise, Doug was hired by renowned Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel as CG Supervisor on Battlestar Galactica, “Caprica”, “Blood and Chrome,” and “Defiance.” Doug won two Emmy Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for Galactica.
What I admire most about Doug, aside from his amazing legacy, is that he always challenges himself to grow in his art and in his career.

LOS ANGELES, CA—March 1, 2013— Dave Dorman’s “Dorothy Daydreams” original painting will be included in the upcoming Creature Features Visions of Oz gallery art show being held at the Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles, California from March 3 – 31. Dorman’s painting, rendered traditionally in oil and acrylic mediums, is a visual homage to the L. Frank Baum literary classic Oz books.
Said Dorman, “It was an honor to be invited to participate in this tribute. For Dorothy Daydreams, I returned to the spirit of L. Frank Baum’s young protagonist, capturing some of her desire to escape the harsh and desolate reality of her Kansas dustbowl farm for the fantasy of a much more colorful, imaginary world.” Dorman will be showing the art progressives from pencil illustration to final painting this weekend on this blog.

Creature Features curated this multimedia exhibit, showcasing more than 100 works from a diverse group of artists.
