Some Dave Dorman Horror Artwork: Too Scary for Busch Gardens!

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 7, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

This story is in my new book ROLLING THUNDER THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN, but I wanted to share this art with you in honor of October, my birthday month and everyone’s favorite month for horror.

A few years back, my business partner Stephen D. Smith, formerly the Editor-in-Chief of the well respected MonsterScene magazine and an authority on haunted and theme park attractions, was asked to come up with a cool haunt idea for Florida’s Busch Gardens. We talked it over and knowing they had an asylum aspect to their haunt, we came up with this really fun character named DEMENTIA. Unfortunately Busch Gardens’ focus groups deemed our character– and her back story of being physically and emotionally destroyed by an uprising in the asylum– way too scary. So without further adieu, I introduce you to our beloved DEMENTIA. If there are any producers out there reading this, we have a wonderful story and we would love to see this in film one day from someone like Ghost House Pictures, whom we know does horror right.

And here she is below, fully rendered. I was so passionate about this piece, I completed it in just 24 hours. There’s nothing I love doing more than creature, character and costume design. The backwards 13 in her forehead is the result of DEMENTIA getting her head smashed into the door of inmate room #13.

In other pop culture news, I picked up American Vampire yesterday at the comic book store in Schaumburg, IL. Denise and I are fighting over who reads it first. Only one of the two stories is actually Stephen King writing, which I think is confusing to many who think they are buying a solely Stephen King graphic novel. Still, it looks to be a lot of fun. Speaking of fun, I saw Resident Evil Afterlife in 3D the other day – have you all seen it? If so, share with me here what you thought of it.

If you get a chance, please check out my passion project, Project 52 – http://www.indiegogo.com/Project-52. I’m working towards my goal of $52,000 to make this happen for USACares.org. If you can give even $5, that guarantees you or the person you designate is mentioned in my new book. I would love to see you in there. My thanks to all who have already generous contributed and gotten us to the $2710 mark in just a few days!

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

A Press Release Regarding A New Member of My Team

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 26, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I ‘ve recently hired Young Social Media from Hollywood, California to handle my online reputation management, social media and branding. I am embedding that press release below, just to make it official here on my blog.  My wife will still be handling my media relations work supplemental to the work Jacob is doing for us. For the record, my wife wrote this release, so please don’t think that I’m this full of myself. Okay, here’s the release:

Comic Book Legend Dave Dorman Names Hollywood’s

Jacob Young Social Media His Agency of Record

Chicago, IL and Hollywood, CA – September 26, 2010 – Dave Dorman, the Eisner Award-winning artist voted the #1 Star Wars Artist of All Time by the fans and world renowned for his dynamic cover art for Indiana Jones, Batman, G.I. Joe and every licensed character in pop culture, is pleased to name Hollywood, California-based Jacob Young Social Media as his social media and branding agency of record.

“Young Social Media has a proven track record of online reputation management and SEO strategy that aligns with my business needs,” Dorman explained. “My team is very excited to apply the energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas from Jacob to our business success.”  Said Jacob K. Young, “Dave Dorman is more than an award-winning artist, more than one of the founding fathers of modern pop culture. He is the very definition of an American Icon. You’d be a fool to say no if asked to work with him.  If you love what you’ve seen him do so far, then get ready to fall in love all over again.”

Dorman’s 2010 string of successes have ranged from being named a VIP guest at San Diego Comic-Con and winning the prestigious Inkpot Award to launching his critically acclaimed new book, ROLLING THUNDER: THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN (IDW Publishing/Desperado Publishing), now available in book retailers nationwide. During the August 2010 Star Wars Celebration 5, Dark Horse Comics named Dorman the cover artist for the final chapter in their Star Wars “Crimson Empire” series, which was news long awaited by the fans. Dorman is also being heavily courted by numerous publishers and videogame developers over his own intellectual property, a motorcycle western action adventure called The Wasted Lands.

Dorman is equally excited about his new charitable art project “52,” which he discussed on a recent episode of The Dennis Miller Radio Show. Dorman is painting 52 individual military pieces of art honoring the men and women in uniform who defend our country. These paintings will be published in a new book with proceeds going to USACares.org. Said Dorman, “I grew up in a military family, so it is my honor and privilege to give something back to our military families.”

Video of My New Book

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 23, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

I inadvertently discovered someone did a great video showcasing my new book, ROLLING THUNDER: THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN. This is a great way to see what you’re getting BEFORE you buy! Here is the YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GALqAxFWs_g

They also posted a very kind and generous review of the book, which is here: http://parkablogs.com/node/4420

Now that you can actually SEE the inside of the new book, please let me know what you think of it. Remember, 20% of all earnings from my book go to USACares.org to help all financially challenged military families (I am a USAF military brat, so I have firsthand knowledge of what that’s like).

Before I forget, please be sure to join these two pages on FaceBook: Dave Dorman’s The Wasted Lands: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=116672708382673

and

My friend and fan Mickey Thompson created these pages, but it’s always good to show Hollywood agents that you have a few fans out there, so please help me  grow these pages to more than 10,000 peeps.

Blick Signing Rescheduled for October

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 23, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

My signing at Blick Art Supply for this forthcoming weekend has been rescheduled for the third weekend in October. Once I get the exact day & time straight, I will post it here for you.

For those who came by during the Chicago Collector’s Expo in Carol Stream, I appreciate your support and it was great seeing you. It was a little odd sitting in a room with the James Bond characters Jaws and the Goldfinger girl, Erin Moran and the Soup Nazi, but such is the life in the pop culture world.

I do have Artist’s Proofs available for sale from Star Wars Celebration 5; if you are interested, please let my wife know at denise@writebrainmedia.com; the artist’s proofs are selling for $100 and I will send them to you with a remarque (sketch) of your choosing in the lower border.

I hope you’re all having a great week and I will have some interesting news to share pretty soon.

For those of you reading this who haven’t done so already, please be sure to join the FaceBook pages “Fans of Dave Dorman Art”

Thanks again for all of your support.

My Tori Amos Art

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 9, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

As promised earlier, I am posting my Tori Amos art. Every once in a while, I’m asked to get involved in a charity, and since I really enjoy Tori’s art — her wonderfully ethereal and original music — I wanted to give back for the enjoyment she’s given her legion of fans for many years.

Both of these original pieces were done as oil and acrylic on illustration board for Tori’s organization, R.A.I.N.N., which stands for the “Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.” Both of these pieces were for calendars she does to raise money and awareness for her organization. The first piece, which is the winter scene, I did to show the contrast between the warmth of her red hair against the brittle cold of a winter forest.

The next piece came as the result of me playing around with the spelling of the name Scarlet, her alter ego, and how I would work that into a sign. I thought of New Orleans and their many trolley “Car Stop” signs, and it inspired me to do this piece, which also appeared in her calendar. This original 12″ x 18″ painting I still have in my possession, so if anyone has a serious interest, I’m asking $5,000 for this treasured piece.

This next piece of text I pulled directly off of their Web site, but it if helps to raise awareness or bring them money, I’m sure they’ll let me take this liberty:

VOTE every day from now through September 30th and help RAINN win $250,000 through the Pepsi Refresh Project. Your vote will allow us to bring our Online Hotline to Spanish-speaking victims!

You can vote 3x a day, every day in September.

Vote Online: www.refresheverything.com/rainn

Vote by text: text 102552 to 73774

Vote through Facebook: install the app once at www.refresheverything.com/rainn and vote from Facebook

Let me know what you think of this art – it’s a little different from what you’re used to seeing me do, so I’m always curious as to how people receive it. This art is also in my new book, Rolling Thunder: The Art of Dave Dorman, so be sure to check it out on Amazon or in your local Borders & Barnes & Noble bookstores. It’s 5 pounds and 326 pages of art and my life’s memoirs, so quite a unique book, great as a gift for Sweetest Day, birthdays, holidays or just as a way to give yourself a rare treat in a bummer economy.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dear Friends,

I just came across these pieces & am posting them, just because.

This one’s always been a fan favorite and people love to see it in person.

Here’s another:

This piece was a published book cover and is also my character Anna Leigh, from The Wasted Lands. BTW, if any of you are on FaceBook, would you and your friends please be so kind as to join the FaceBook page “Dave Dorman’s The Wasted Lands”?  Here’s the link:

I really need to show strong fan support for my own comic book series property.

DAVE DORMAN’s UPCOMING APPEARANCES:

I wanted to let you know about my September appearances in case any of you can join me. Both will be in Northern Illinois.  On September 9-12, 2010 I will be joining the Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo, and here’s a link for time & location: http://www.nonsportcardexpo.com/ It will be held at the Holiday Inn on Gary Avenue in Carol Stream, IL, which is a Chicago suburb about 45 minutes west of the city.

My 2nd appearance in September will be a book signing for my new book, ROLLING THUNDER: THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN on September 26th from 1-3 p.m. at BLICK ART SUPPLY in Wheaton, IL.  The address & phone # are as follows:

Blick Art Materials

79 Danada Square East (Northeast Corner of Butterfield Road & Naperville Road)

Wheaton, IL

Their phone # is 630.653.0569. Ask for my good friend Kevin  Sandstrom, who is the manager there.

Note: Don’t be surprised is you see some Stormtroopers on guard.

For those of you waiting on books & prints, I’m doing the sketches this weekend. I’m still finishing up my World of Warcraft project, so this is the reason for the delay. I’m always thankful for a holiday weekend – although it’s never time off for me!

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dave Dorman Announcement: FINAL CHAPTER IN CRIMSON EMPIRE is a GO!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 17, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

For some of you, the moment you’ve been patiently awaiting has arrived – I will be doing CRIMSON EMPIRE for Dark Horse, finishing out the series, with 6 covers. I discovered this at Star Wars Celebration 5, as I was surprised by “Pith Lord” Randy Stradley, who sneaked up on me (literally) and surprised me with this wonderful news. I can’t tell you how eager I am to do this project. I’ve been asked about finishing Crimson Empire thousands of times, and I’m so glad I finally have good news to share.

Before I forget, big news: I’m on CNN.com right now. Here’s the link: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-482375

My friend Josh Estrin (who wrote the CNN piece) runs Celebbuzz (smack-free interviews with celebs) and I like his stance, as there’s just too much negativity in this world and he keeps his interviews devoid of it. Check him out. He also writes for Examiner.com.

In other PR news, Sirius Satellite Radio had a channel dedicated solely to Star Wars Celebration 5 for 4 days. I believe it was Channel 180. I was interviewed on Saturday morning, but I didn’t get to hear it, so if anyone has a link or feedback for me on the interview, I’d love to hear it.

I want to thank Chris Spice and his crew for lending me some muscle in setting up my booth this year. They are the best people and fellow 501st members (and Chris runs a certain Web site…). I also thank all of you who purchased prints from me this year at Star Wars Celebration, as well as prelims.

One of my customer couples soon became  my wife’s & my closest friends – funny how you just click with certain people that way.  So for Gary & Rhonda Price, I thank you for ALL that you did for us over the 5 days, which was a LOT. For those of you with product, please let me connect you with Gary, who is very involved in the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Hollywood, FL. It’s a worthwhile cause and I support it as well and will be sending plenty of product to Gary.

I thank all of the 501st members from all over the world who signed my personal print from Star Wars Celebration 5, which I will hang with my other 2 signed prints.  I really treasure those.

I thank The Collector for all that he did to support me and promote me at the show, and my old Pensacola friend  Pat Augustine, whom I hadn’t seen in way too many years. It was so good to catch up. He brought me the fan comics he & I used to create & Xerox over at the Pensacola newspaper (one of our friends’ dads was an editor there at the time), so he really saw my evolution in my work up close and personal. If anyone wants to see this work, I can scan it in & post it on my blog. Let me know if  you want to see it.

Before I forget, please be sure to post reviews of my new book “ROLLING THUNDER: THE ART OF DAVE DORMAN” on Amazon.com. That really helps me out a lot, and I appreciate it. The books should be available in retail outlets soon, or you can order them directly through me for $100 and I will include a full-page sketch on the inside cover of the book.

Okay, I’m heading back to Chicago soon, but I wanted to check in and fill you all in on all of the news. I will post pictures from my personal photos of SWC5 on this blog this week as well.

Thanks for reading,

Dave.

Dave Dorman Posts Star Wars Celebration 5 Art

Posted in DAVE DORMAN NEWS with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 7, 2010 by DaveandDeniseDorman

Dear Friends,

As always, I thank you all for taking an interest in my work. Here is the final artwork for the art prints I’m selling at Star Wars Celebration 5. As you know, these prints sell out quickly, so be sure to place your order if you are attending the show. I can only sell signed & numbered prints to those who pick up the artwork in person at SWC5. They retail for $100. All pre-orders must be picked up by noon on Friday, August 13th. (Don’t worry, unlucky numbers seem to have the opposite effect on me.)

So, here is my painting for its very first unveiling. The piece is called “A Slight Disturbance in the Force on the Battlefield of Hoth.” True Star Wars fans will “get” it.

A Slight Disturbance in the Force on the Battlefield of Hoth

Dave Dorman's Star Wars Celebration 5 Painting

A special thanks to all of those valiant members of the 501st who posed for me. My wife Denise did take progressive photos of this painting as it evolved, so stay posted as we determine where that will launch, as stills and as a slide show/video. There are some high profile media outlets interested in it, so we’re waiting to see who wants it most.

I look forward to seeing you all very soon!
